As a leading integrated mining and metals business, we take our communities and the environment very seriously and we value the relationships we have with our key stakeholders and the communities in which we operate.
The sustainability of our business will be a result of our ability to provide economic benefits to our shareholders, our customers and the communities in which we operate; while not harming our people, our neighbours or the environment.
We contribute to sustainable development by producing valuable metals to meet society’s needs. We also increasingly contribute to the recycling of metals, particularly zinc and lead, from secondary sources.
Our approach to business sustainability is a holistic one and this is recognised in the Nyrstar Way and our Code of Business Conduct, and encompasses our approach to Corporate Social Responsibility, Safety, Health and the Environment.
Safety and Health
Our focus is to provide a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors and visitors. Improving our health and safety performance requires a consistent and holistic approach. This is reflected in the Nyrstar Way and our Safety and Health Policy.
As a heavy industrial operation we actively work to continuously improve our safety performance and build upon our culture of looking after each other and keeping each other safe.
Nyrstar’s health and safety policies and standards provide a clear statement of our commitment and goals for health and safety management. We publicly report upon our health and safety programs and performance on an annual basis in the Nyrstar Sustainability Report.
Corporate Social Responsibility at Nyrstar
The Nyrstar Corporate Social Responsibility Framework is a positive affirmation of the Nyrstar Way and demonstrates our determination to deliver on our promises to minimise harm, maximise benefit and be accountable to our key stakeholders.
Our aim is to be a welcome and valued part of the communities in which we participate. As part of this, Nyrstar commits to:
Engaging with our stakeholders, to understand and respond to their expectations and maintain open and honest communications;
Investing in our communities by building goodwill and developing quality long term relationships that are important to our business;
and Respecting fundamental human rights and not participating in business activities that abuse human rights.
Nyrstar has a number of local community initiatives underway at operating sites.
Our aim is to minimize the environmental impact of both our production processes and our products. We will conduct our operations in compliance with all relevant environmental regulations, licenses and legislation.
We intend to apply similar standards to all assets wherever they are located, with the aim of minimizing any harm to people and the environment.
We identify, monitor and manage environmental risks arising from our operations and have, or plan to have, formal site environmental management systems externally certified to ISO14001 at all operating sites to ensure appropriate focus and integration of environmental issues in our business.
The key environmental issues for our sites reflect, in general, the long site histories and ongoing changes in regulatory standards. These issues relate essentially to the remediation of historical soil and groundwater contamination, by-product and waste management, upgrade of pollution control equipment for air and water emissions and upgrade of facilities to reduce fugitive emissions to air and reduce future soil contamination.
Zinc production is an energy intensive industry, so energy efficiency is important to us and we are putting formal processes in place to assess ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. Other improvement initiatives relate to improving our water-use efficiency and reducing the amount of wastes to landfill.
We have a number of projects underway to minimise the environmental impact of both our production processes and our products. For details visit our Case Studies page.
