As an international mining company, the largest producer of iron ore pellets in North America, and a major supplier of metallurigcal coal to the global steelmaking industry, Cliffs has operations on three continents. Our North American business unit operates six iron ore mines in Michigan, Minnesota and Canada, and three coking coal mines in West Virginia and Alabama. Cliffs' Australian iron ore operation provides direct-shipping ores to Asian markets.

Cliffs' Asia Pacific operations, located in Australia, are comprised of two iron ore mining complexes in Western Australia, the Koolyanobbing Operation and Cockatoo Island Project and a 45% economic interest in a coking and thermal coal mine in Queensland, Australia.

As part of Cliffs’ growth and diversification strategy, the creation of a Global Exploration Group team was introduced in 2009 to seek and develop a pipeline of exploration and mineral resource development projects.  This is achieved through identifying, investing and assisting in the development of target commodity opportunities.
