Huckleberry Mines is an open pit copper/molybdenum mine located approximately 130 km south of Smithers and 86 km southwest of Houston, in west central British Columbia. The mine started commercial production in October 1997. On January 2, 2012 we received approval for the Main Zone Optimization (MZO) Expansion Project from the Company’s Board of Directors and BC Ministry of Natural Resources Operations. The expansion will create more employment opportunities in all areas of the Mine’s operations over the next ten years.
Huckleberry Mines is owned and operated by Huckleberry Mines ltd (HML) which is a British Columbia company, owned by a consortium of Japanese companies (Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, Dowa Mining Co. Ltd, Furukawa Co. Ltd and Marubeni Corporation) and Imperial Metals Corporation.
Mining is accomplished by conventional drilling, blasting, loading and hauling using a combination of electric drills and shovels, diesel hydraulic excavators and both 100 and 150 ton diesel powered haul trucks.
Approximately 17,000 tonnes of ore per day is processed through the Mill. Milling is accomplished by grinding the ore in a 9.75m diameter SAG mill and then through 2 ball mills. The resulting slurry is processed by flotation to produce a concentrate of 27% copper. Copper concentrate is shipped by truck to the port of Stewart for storage and shipment to Japan by ocean going vessels.
Huckleberry Mines' commitment to safety and the environment is demonstrated by its excellent safety record and being award the Jake McDonald B.C. Reclamation Award in 2000, Premier's Award - Reclamation and Prospecting Program 2010 and 2010 Collaborative Research Award presented by the Northern BC Business and Technology Awards sponsored by the University of Northern British Columbia.
While at the mine site, employees live in a camp setting with meals and accommodations provided free of charge. Transportation by bus is provided from Houston and Smithers. Huckleberry Mines offers a competitive salary, full range of benefits and cash incentive plan.
