In Queensland, Australia, Rio Tinto's wholly owned Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) operates the Blair Athol Mine (57.2 per cent), Tarong Mine (100 per cent), Kestrel Mine (80 per cent), Hail Creek Mine (82 per cent), and is assessing the development of the Clermont project (50.1 per cent) and Kunioon deposit (100 per cent). RTCA produces approximately 26 million tonnes per year and employs around 700 people. RTCA also manages Coal & Allied's three operations in the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia. Under its previous name of Pacific Coal, Rio Tinto Coal Australia has been in operation since 1979.
