Our coal division includes six metallurgical coal mines in British Columbia and Alberta and is the world’s second largest exporter of seaborne hard coking coal. The Coal Mountain, Elkview, Fording River, Greenhills, and Line Creek mines are located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 1,100 kilometres from the ports near Vancouver, British Columbia. Cardinal River is located in west-central Alberta, near the town of Hinton.
All of our coal mines produce primarily hard coking coal, which is ultimately used in the production of steel, and small amounts of thermal coal. The mines employ conventional open-pit truck and shovel mining methods and coal preparation plants. Following mining, the coal is washed using a variety of conventional techniques and conveyed to dryers for drying. The coal preparation plants are all conventional wash plants using standard technology of cycloning and heavy media flotation.
Clean coal is shipped mainly by rail to Westshore Terminals and Neptune Terminals near Vancouver, British Columbia for shipment to overseas customers and either directly by rail or by rail and ship to Thunder Bay Terminals in Ontario to customers in eastern North America.
Cardinal River Operations
Cardinal River Operations is Teck Coal’s only Alberta-based operation. Mining at this location originally commenced in 1969. Its recently developed Cheviot Pit mining area has generated significant public interest, particularly with regard to environmental management. Cardinal River Operations is located approximately 42 kilometres south of Hinton, Alberta.
Coal Mountain Operations
Coal Mountain is located 30 kilometres southeast of the community of Sparwood in the very southeastern corner of British Columbia. The minesite is comprised of 2,521 hectares of coal lands of which approximately 950 hectares are currently being mined or are scheduled for mining. A key focus at Coal Mountain is applying research into high-elevation reclamation habitat for elk and mule deer, which has resulted in a growing number of the animals surviving through severe Canadian winters.
Elkview Operations
Elkview Operations has the largest amount of reserves of the six Teck coal mines. With over 235 million tonnes of clean coal reserves, the mine life is more than 47 years at current production rates. Elkview is proud of its 35-year operating history, and of the fact it has successfully reclaimed over one-quarter of the land disturbed over the past four decades. Elkview Operations is located in the Elk Valley region of southeastern British Columbia, 15 kilometres from the town of Sparwood. The minesite is comprised of approximately 23,000 hectares of coal lands.
Fording River Operations
The Fording River Operations is based on an immense clean coal reserve, surpassing 200 million tonnes. At current production rates, the mine life is about 27 years. Located in the Elk Valley region of southeastern British Columbia, 29 kilometres northeast of the town of Elkford, the minesite is comprised of 20,304 hectares of coals lands. 4,220 hectares are currently being mined or are scheduled for mining.
Greenhills Operations
The Greenhills Operations, located in southeastern British Columbia eight kilometres northeast of Elkford, is operated under a partnership agreement with Pohang Steel Canada Limited and Teck, with Teck owning 80%. The minesite is comprised of 10,892 hectares of coal lands, of which approximately 2,200 hectares are currently being mined or are scheduled for mining from its 89 million tonnes of clean coal reserves.
Line Creek Operations
Line Creek Operations has a proud history of reclamation research. Line Creek launched a new aquatic study in 2007, built on expanding a fisheries study that had been ongoing for the past 24 years. Data indicates numbers of fish actually increasing after mining activity began, and numbers holding steady at other streams in the area.
The Line Creek mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, about 22 kilometres north of Sparwood, mining its 17 million tonnes of clean coal reserves.
