Civil Engineer

Civil Engineers play a crucial role in mining as they are extensively involved in the design and building of the infrastructure for the mines, including the entire civil infrastructure and the processing facilities etc. In mining Civil Engineers will perform engineering duties very specific to mining operations where they will be involved in planning, designing and overseeing the construction and maintenance of various structures for both open-pit and underground mines.

Typical Duties

  • Involved in the design of various structures for both open-pit and underground mines
  • Analyse survey reports, drawings, maps, blueprints, geological data necessary for various projects
  • Training and supervision of personnel, including surveyors, construction managers and civil engineering technicians
  • Plan and design hydraulic systems and structures
  • Plan and design transportation structures and systems
  • Manage the construction, operation and maintenance of the work
  • Ensure that the civil engineering works required is done so safely and in the most environmentally effective ways possible
  • Test soils and various other material to determine the requirement needed for the building of foundations and structures
  • Prepare public reports e.g. environmental impact reports, bid proposals and deeds
  • Civil Engineers would be extensively involved in project management
  • Design all the earthworks, concrete and steel structures

Working Conditions

  • Civil Engineers may spend a lot of time working in offices but will also spent time on mine sites where they can monitor and oversee operations, or solve problems on site as and when necessary
  • Depending on the type of mine, they may work in the open above ground, or underground
  • Civil Engineers must be prepared to travel and will often stay away from home for extended periods. They may be required at times to stay on site away from home, or to work on a fly in fly out basis. FIFO commonly involves flying in for a certain period of time whilst the Civil Engineer would be on site, and then flying home for periods when they are off work
  • Civil Engineers will often get to see the world as if working for large international companies, their job will often involve international travel

Educational Requirements

  • Students interested in entering Civil Engineering programs should take courses in Mathematics and Science in high school
  • A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering is a prerequisite
  • Degrees in Civil Engineering typically take four years to complete and include coursework in Statistics, Mathematics, and Engineering Mechanisms amongst others
  • Should you be interested in a Research or Academic position, it will require a Doctorate or Master’s degree
  • Civil Engineers will generally have to have a strong background in Maths and Science, especially Chemistry and Physics. They will also have to have strong problem solving abilities, as well as the ability to communicate effectively

Personal Attributes

  • Have an aptitude for Maths and Physics
  • Have an interest in the environment and technology and how they can fit together
  • Enjoy working with Math, Science and Computers
  • Have an elevated sense of respect for safety procedures and regulations
  • Be able to embrace new techniques and technologies
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • Have a good work ethic and be goal oriented
  • Have a sense of adventure and be able to spend extended periods of time away from home

Compensation

  • Civil Engineers typically earn very good salaries and for those working in mining industry salaries may be especially lucrative
  • Engineers across the board are renowned to earn high salaries, and Civil Engineers are no exception
  • Civil Engineers spend many years studying, work hard and often have to make sacrifices in times of time spent away from their families, and for this reason they are adequately compensated
