Consulting Engineer

The Consulting Engineer may provide a wide range of services to the client which would involve critical thinking and problem solving abilities to ensure that the clients engineering processes become the most efficient, and cost saving as possible. They would also ensure that safety and environment is not being compromised in any way. This role of a Consulting Engineer may be offered through a consulting engineering company or by a sole practitioner.

Typical Duties

  • May be involved in scientific, technical or a management role or a combination of all three
  • Define client’s needs, investigation and report
  • Oversee project design and the construction process including manpower, contracting requirements and material involved
  • Design and preparation of contract documentation
  • Undertake technical and feasibility studies and site investigations
  • Risk analysis of specific projects
  • Supervising tendering procedures and doing proposals
  • Managing budgets and other project resources
  • Manage and supervise engineering projects for clients
  • Supervise subcontractors who will provide
  • specialist assistance for the various parts and stages of a project
  • Ensuring that the project runs smoothly and deadlines are met
  • Ensure the project complies with government and company health, safety and environmental standards

Working Conditions

  • While the job of a Consulting Engineer will involve a lot of office based activities
  • Consulting Engineers will generally also spend time on the client site
  • Consulting Engineers in mining may also be required to spend some time on the mine
  • Depending on the type of mine, Consulting Engineers may spend some time in the open above ground, or underground where it can be cramped and hot
  • Production sites can be remotely located and can be hot and noisy, and Engineers may be required to wear protective glasses and clothing
  • Consulting Engineers may be required from time to time to travel to and stay away from home for extended periods. They may be required to live on site away from home, or to work on a fly in fly out basis. FIFO commonly involves flying in for a certain period of time whilst the Consulting Engineer would be on site, and then flying home for periods when they are off work
  • Consulting Engineers may get to see the world as if working for large international companies, their job will often involve international travel
  • There is a high level of responsibility involved in being a Consulting Engineer and the job can be demanding

Educational Requirements

  • It would be essential for a Chemical Engineer to have a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. This is sometimes also known as Bimolecular Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering students will generally also be required to gain some practical, hands on experience, where they will earn college credit for structured job experience
  • A postgraduate qualification can be beneficial, as can relevant manufacturing or process industry work experience
  • Opportunities to gain experience and an insight into the profession are provided by many employers via vacation work, sponsorship and industrial placements

Personal Attributes

  • Need to have strong numeracy and technical skills
  • The ability and interest in working with budgets and deadlines
  • A knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Must have leadership skills and be able to oversee large projects
  • Excellent communication skills are essential
  • Because of the flexibility to work on a range of projects Consulting Engineers will be forever learning and need to be able to adapt and adjust to change
  • Be able to embrace new techniques and technologies, and be interested in keeping up to date on industry requirements and advancements
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • Have a good work ethic and be goal oriented
  • Must be interested in working in mites sites which are often located in remote locations
