Millwright

Millwrights are also responsible for interpreting drawing, handling layouts and the assembly of parts. The mining industry is extremely reliant on machinery and for it to be working safely and at optimal performance and for this reason millwrights play a crucial role in the mining industry.

Typical Duties

  • Install, dismantle, repair and assemble mining related equipment and machinery
  • Comply with safety regulations on machinery and equipment by conducting testing, safety and combustion control standards
  • Read diagrams and schematic drawings and manuals
  • Recording of repairs and services
  • Troubleshooting breakdowns
  • Align and test equipment and make necessary adjustments
  • Performing preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Routine maintenance and inspection
  • Inspect mobile and stationery equipment for defects and required repairs
  • Maintain safe working conditions and adhere to occupational l health and safety regulations
  • Service and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Repair or replace defective parts

Working Conditions

  • Millwrights in mining may be required to spend all of their time onsite
  • Depending on the type of mine and what type of equipment being worked on, the Millwrights may spend some time in the open above ground, or underground where it can be cramped and hot
  • Working with machinery can be dangerous and it is not uncommon for Millwrights to suffer minor cuts, burns and bruises
  • The work environment of a Millwright will typically involve their getting dirty as they will be working with grease and machinery that can be dirty
  • The machinery and the tools used can also make a lot of noise, and they can be exposed to fumes
  • Millwrights may be required from time to time to travel to and stay away from home for extended periods. They may be required to live on site away from home, or to work on a fly in fly out basis. FIFO commonly involves flying in for a certain period of time whilst the Millwright would be on site, and then flying home for periods when they are off work
  • There is a high level of responsibility involved in being a Millwright with a special emphasis on safety and the job can be demanding
  • May be required to work in awkward positions and concentrate for long periods of time

Educational Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent the mining requirement in order to become a Millwright
  • Post-secondary training is however generally preferred by employers in the form of an apprenticeship program
  • A certificate or degree program is required in many regions
  • Students interested in pursuing a career as a Millwright should take courses in electronics, hands on automotive repair, maths and computers
  • On the job training is common as well and would involve working for the employer for a set amount of time

  • Must have a passion for and enjoy fixing things
  • Need to stay up to date with technology and be familiar with the latest machinery and tools
  • Must have physical stamina and be able to work with heavy equipment
  • Have a good work ethic and be goal oriented
  • Need to be an analytical thinker and able to analyse and isolate faults
  • Must have a thirst for knowledge, technology and machinery is ever evolving and it’s important to have a desire to stay on top of new technology and be willing and keen to be continually learning and training
  • Must be interested in working on mite sites which are often located in remote locations

  • There is as a whole a demand for tradesmen in many regions of the world and mining is no exception and for this reason Millwrights often command good salaries
  • Millwrights across the board are renowned to earn high salaries, and those in mining are no exception
  • Millwrights tend to earn extremely competitive salaries often more than those in other industries
