Barr is seeking a civil technician to work on challenging projects involving data collection, planning, problem solving, design, and construction assistance. The person selected for this position will be part of multi-disciplinary project teams, providing computer-aided drafting expertise using AutoCAD on a Windows platform with an emphasis on Civil 3D. Typical duties may include working with engineers to design earthwork and utility projects, prepare drawings, assist with specifications, and perform construction observation.

Project responsibilities include processing survey data; performing grading design; developing and managing project CAD file structures, basefiles, planimetrics, 3D design surfaces, pipe networks, and construction drawing and renderings; and determining quantities for cost estimating and report preparation. Additional responsibilities may include providing construction observation and administration assistance, surveying, and monitoring. The work may involve out-of-town assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two-year technical certificate or experience/coursework directly related to the job responsibilities
  • Understanding of civil design principles and grading
  • Proficiency using current versions of AutoCAD and Civil 3D or other CADD-based civil design software
  • Proficiency in 3D surface creation
  • Proficiency in earthwork volumetric computations
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients
  • Ability and willingness to work cooperatively with project team members in a high-energy working environment that encourages self-initiative
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience working on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above at a consulting engineering
  • Familiarity with software packages including additional drafting packages such as Revit, MicroStation, Geopak, InRoads, ArcGIS, Excel, and word processing software
  • Experience in developing civil construction drawings
  • Familiarity with large earthwork construction sites and typical earthmoving construction equipment
  • Familiarity with soil mechanics and materials testing
  • Basic understanding of surveying principles
  • Familiarity with construction cost estimating
  • Familiarity with work in an industrial environment and basic knowledge of various industrial disciplines and industrial construction


NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided.
