An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Intermediate Electrical Engineer to join our Tucson office to work on the Rosemont project, which is a large copper development project, located in Pima County, Arizona, approximately 30 miles southeast of Tucson.

Ausenco has been working with Hudbay Minerals on the Rosemont Project since 2015; through value engineering and detailed feasibility study phases, proceeding to full EPCM development of the processing facilities, site infrastructure and tailings facilities. Project duration is expected to last from Q2 2019 to Q2 2022.

Rosemont will be the third-largest copper mine in the United States, accounting for 10% of domestic annual copper production, and has an expected 19-year mine life. The Project has recently completed a 10-year permitting process and will be one of the most environmentally sensitive and advanced operations ever permitted in the United States, including the largest dry stack tailings facility of its kind in the world. The processing plant will produce copper and molybdenum concentrates by a process that includes; crushing, grinding, flotation, concentrate handling, and filtration and dry-stacking of the tailing's residue.

Key Responsibilities of the Role:

  • Perform studies and calculations including arc-flash, power flow, short-circuit studies and voltage drop for electrical distribution systems
  • Prepare electrical engineering and design deliverables including medium & low voltage power distribution, motor control centers, power and control schemes, single line diagrams, equipment and cable tray layouts, cable schedules, cable and conduit routings, grounding, lightning and lighting layouts
  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications and technical bid evaluations for equipment such as power transformers, medium and low voltage switchgear, motor control centers, and variable frequency drives.
  • Check and review vendor data and drawings from other disciplines
  • Fully understand electrical design considerations and interdisciplinary interfaces required for the successful design of a complex mineral processing facility
  • Perform self-check of completed work and provide guidance to less experienced engineers
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Undergraduate Degree in Electrical Engineering with at least 5 years' work experience in the US and a PE in the state of Arizona
  • 7+ years' experience in a mineral processing, or a similar industrial, setting.
  • Prior industry experience in copper concentrator projects considered an asset
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards such as NEC, NFPA, NEMA and API
  • Familiarity with power related studies (Load Flow, Short Circuit, Arc Flash, and Ground Grid) is a key
  • Advanced experience in ETAP, Microsoft Office and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of SPEL (Smart Plant Electrical) is an asset
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal and written) and proven leadership skills and ability to collaborate with team members in a multi-disciplined environment
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced environment
