[Company] is currently looking for a Field Geotechnical Engineer for a remote construction site in British Columbia with a rotational schedule of 14 days on site, 7 days off. The successful candidate must be adaptable, self-motivated, have the ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment, and be able to build and maintain strong relationships with both colleagues and external clients through excellent verbal and written communication.

Reporting to the Field Engineering Manager, the Field Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for administering their duties under the ground control management plan and inspecting and recording the encountered rock mass conditions, validating design assumptions, prescribing rock support and participating in quality control testing.

The Field Geotechnical Engineer will also be responsible for inspecting and monitoring geotechnical conditions along the project access roads throughout the course of construction. The Field Geotechnical Engineer will work closely with the Construction Supervisors to provide engineering direction with regards to nonconformances or technical issues that arise throughout construction as well as preparing as built geotechnical records.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Construction Supervisors by reviewing site data, encountered conditions and construction work for compliance against design requirements
  • Carry out engineering geological face and fold out mapping including rockmass and soil classification using conventional industry acceptable classification schemes (NGI Q, RMR, GSI, USSCS etc.) for surface and underground excavations to validate design assumptions; maintain these records during construction and for record purposes
  • Supporting geo-environmental classification of potential acid generating and metal leaching rock
  • Carry out geotechnical design using rocscience suite of design tools including but not limited to, RocData, Unwedge, RocPlane, Swedge, RS2, RocSupport and Dips to validate excavation stability and rock support prescriptions
  • Prescribe rock support in accordance with the design and specifications
  • Assist in the validation of Contractor proposed design changes, submittal reviews and adjudication of commercial documentation where related to the ground
  • Administer the Ground Control Management Plan including performing routine inspections of the underground works, prescribing and agreeing remedial actions to secure the ground
  • Providing ground control awareness training to those working underground
  • Where applicable, participate in quality control testing and review quality control documentation to validate excavation and rock support installation and assist the quality assurance program
  • Assist, manage and resolve cross-discipline conflicts when discovered in engineering deliverables (drawings and specifications)
  • As applicable, assist with constructability input and on-site monitoring of design, work scope and construction sequence
  • Assist field information requests and site design change procedures and provide support in the concession review process
  • Review contractor supplied deliverables including as-built documentation
  • Generate and check field sketches or red-line engineering deliverables
  • Manage, control and maintain onsite drawings, files and registers
  • Perform technical review at substantial and final completions

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in geological engineering or engineering geology from an accredited university
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist or Engineer in Training, and in good standing, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia or recognized equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 years field engineering experience in underground works in hard rock conditions
  • Understanding of geotechnical design and field execution processes for underground projects in remote sites
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
  • Knowledge and experience of construction means and methods including rehabilitation of existing surface and underground excavations, excavation by drill and blast and by TBM methods, rock support installation and probe drilling
  • Ability to produce workable and timely solutions to a myriad of field issues
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Good organizational skills to manage varying daily workloads
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office applications
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and communicate well
  • Competent management and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Exhibits flexibility and effective situational leadership skills
