The Position Geologist

Job Summary
Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Identify the "what" and "why" of the job leading to the end results.

  • Plan and follow execution of drilling campaigns 20%
  • Manage geological database system (historical data, drilling, lab analysis, survey, QAQC) 20%
  • Perform geological data analysis 20%
  • Build geological models and estimate mineral resources using Surpac 25%
  • Assists yearly Reserves/Resources reporting. (5%)
  • Actively manage and promote best practice in Health, Safety and Environmental to achieve statutory legislation and company policy. Promote action plans to continuously improve staff, workforce and contractors commitments towards a zero accident culture. (5%)
  • Participates in Corporate mine planning team reviews and audits. (5%)

Skills and Attributes Requirements

Identify skills/attributes required for this position which may include leadership, problem solving, interpersonal, communications, planning and team participation skills.

Has thorough understanding and application of principles, concepts, practices, and standards associated with geology, exploration and resource estimation. Resolves problems by analyzing information, identifying and evaluating optional courses of action. Contributes to the development of techniques in the Resource Estimation context of PRMS.

  • Organizational skills will be necessary for organizing geology and exploration activities, scheduling and conducting meetings, providing training, and overseeing the implementation, maintenance and enforcement of various programs.
  • Analytical and statistical skills are needed to evaluate and analyze data, develop exploration plans and geologic models.
  • Computer skills are required to manage and utilize data management and GIS and geology software packages and ensure best practice on resource estimation.
  • Interpersonal skills are necessary in order to work with both internal and external customers without major conflicts and maintain teamwork at the company's locations.
  • Leadership skills are needed to ensure that the mine employees work toward common corporate/location goals and objectives.
  • Administrative skills are required to manage paperwork, meet reporting requirements, oversee the management of various systems, and ensure that employees have the resources needed to execute their activities safely and efficiently.  
  • Self-motivation is necessary to ensure that the work progresses without constant supervision.
  • Planning skills are needed to ensure exploration and other geology activities are effectively developed and maintained and that the timely completion of programs satisfies legal and corporate objectives.
  • Training and team building skills will be needed to improve individual competencies as well as develop focused group action. 
  • Communications skills will be used to interact with employees at all levels of the organization as well as external customers.
  • Delegation skills are necessary to plan, direct and assign work.
  • Knowledge of exploration and resource estimation practices and principles. 

Education/Experience Requirements

Educational requirements should be the minimum level acceptable for the position.  Experience should describe both type and amount of necessary qualifying experience.  Also note any professional licenses required.

College/University Education: Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in geology.

Other Qualifications: Two to five years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • The holder of this role must have a thorough understanding of exploration activities (drilling, logging, sampling, QAQC, data analysis, and geology), geologic data analysis, and geologic/resource estimation.
  • This role holder must have strong computer skills (Excel, Access, GIS software, geologic modelling software, and database concepts)
  • Knowledge in geostatistics and coding is desirable

  • Work is performed in mining environment exposed to seasonal climate conditions; exposed to dust, noise, and uneven, slippery surfaces.
  • Office work is required.  Operate computer systems including PC, network, and process interfaces - Frequently.
  • Sitting up to 50% of work time. Standing and walking up to 50% of work time.
