The company

  • Our client is a Non Departmental Public Body whose key function is to manage the legacy of coal mining in the UK. 
  • It is also a statutory consultee to the town and country planning processes across England, Scotland and Wales.  
  • This status means that they advise local authorities on coal related matters to help them determine planning applications and prepare strategic plans and policies for future development. 
  • This is a key role in the department where the core business is managing around 6,000 consultations per year.

Job role:

  • The successful candidate will be sponsored (course fees and expenses) to study for the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) accredited Certificate in Spatial Planning Studies.  
  • This 12 month academic course will provide the technical knowledge and set the context for the role.  
  • Following completion of the course and a subsequent period of practical experience the post holder would be eligible to apply for Technical Membership of the RTPI (TechRTPI) which is a recognised status within the planning profession.
  • This course is an integral part of the role and a firm commitment to studying this qualification is essential.  
  • This course also provides the basis for people wanting to progress to the higher academic level required to become a professional planner.
  • If you like to be challenged by a role in which you are the front line for all departmental enquiries from stakeholders and like using your initiative in determining which actions need to be taken and directed to appropriate team members, you will thoroughly enjoy this role.
  • A critical and essential skill will be the ability to ensure that the registration process of a continuously high volume of incoming consultations is started without any delays.  
  • This is necessary to ensure that those team members preparing the consultation responses can meet the external deadlines set by the legislation without exception.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Being the primary point of contact for the department for internal and external stakeholders;
  • Responsibility for assessing, validating and starting the registration process for all incoming planning consultations and enquiries; 
  • Managing the provision of coal mining information for key stakeholders using a bespoke data portal facility;
  • Responsibility for a range of initial and formal consultation responses on behalf of the the company.
  • Responsibility for co-ordinating the day to day operations of all departmental systems; initiating and completing changes to the departmental intranet and internet pages.
