Project Manager of Engineering

This position reports to Freeport-McMoRan Americas (FMA) and provides technical expertise, guidance and leadership for all phases of assigned projects and programs at multiple sites, and will facilitate the required actions in the coordination, planning, scheduling, and contractor requirements ensuring the successful conclusion of all phases within an appropriate time and at appropriate cost. This position will also facilitate training in respect to the fundamental equipment design and parameters.  Significant travel (over 50%) will be required, to both domestic and international locations.
 
  • Reviews and analyzes project requirements to establish tasks and subtasks and project timelines; including identification and implementation of best practices.
  • Assembles and supervises project staff.
  • Creates and maintains a database of project tasks and assignments.
  • Compiles and reports to management regarding project status.
  • Serves as technical expert on project management issues.
  • Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations.  Provides guidance and counsel to site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations.
  • Contributes to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for project management.
  • May represent the site on company-sponsored steering teams.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or closely related area. 
  • Seven (7) years engineering experience in an area or areas relevant to assignment, including supervisory or lead experience as well as prior project management experience.
  • Knowledge of project management techniques and practices.
  • Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.  Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to investigate, research, evaluate, and provide engineering recommendations.
  • Skilled in managing large/complex engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of mining processes, equipment and infrastructure.
  • Ability to manage activities across multiple sites.  
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to obtain a valid passport. 
  • Ability to travel (over 50%).
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience managing technical and engineering personnel in a fleet management capacity.
  • Experience developing standard operating procedures and implementing processes and procedures in diverse international environments.
  • Experience with PC, Unix, and Linux based operation systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting advanced networking and systems issues.
  • Experience with SQLServer and Web-based reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of machine health processes including reliability engineering.
  • Multi-site support experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in a technical field.
  • Experience with third party control systems and/or ability to integrate new systems into production systems.
  • Experience with two-way radio communication and wireless MESH technologies.
  • HMI/PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals.
  • Understanding of historical data collection systems.
 
Criteria/Conditions (specific background and skills) 
  • Position involves work with multiple sites and requires significant travel (over 50%) to domestic and/or foreign locations.  The candidate must be a self starter and have good personal organization skills for managing activities across multiple sites.  
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
