Where Mining Finds Its People

This job has expired. Click here to see new and active jobs like this one.

Jobs on CareerMine expire for many reasons. Either the employer has requested the advanced expiration of the job (as the vacancy has been filled or cancelled), or the job ad has expired after its normal running-time of 60 days within the CareerMine system. While there is the possibility that the vacancy may still be active, it is most likely that it has been filled or cancelled; otherwise it would be on CareerMine still.

It is strongly advised that you do not contact the company or advertising agency regarding this, or any other expired role, for the purposes of gaining employment with that company. Companies often impose strict penalties on job seekers who go outside of the established channels, to contact the employer regarding vacancies. (Employers have also made it clear in the past, that sourcing expired jobs and contacting them regarding their status, is one of these non-established routes.)

Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Group is the custodian of Rio Tinto’s iron ore interests globally.  Our operations include Pilbara Iron and HIsmelt® in Australia,  Iron Ore Company of Canada  and Rio Tinto Corumba in Brazil with emerging operations in India and Guinea, West Africa.

The Simandou Iron Ore Project is one of the most exciting and valuable developments within Rio Tinto. Situated in South East Guinea this world-class iron ore province is of exceptional size and quality. The project comprises development of a 70mtpa mine, a 700km rail system and construction of a deep water port. This is a Greenfield development with unique characteristics to be developed in one of the world’s poorest countries.

The Geologist role is critical to successfully understanding the geology and physical properties of the iron mineralization along the Simandou Range, whilst developing local Guinean junior geologists and supervising drilling programs.

The scope of this role includes supervision and logging on both reverse circulation and diamond drilling programs, including geological and some geotechnical logging. The geologist is involved in hands on contractor management on a day-to-day basis. There will also be opportunities to be involved in other geological technical activities such as mapping programs, geophysical surveys (downhole, surface and airborne) and resource modeling.

This role requires tertiary-qualified candidates with technical and operational experience who are ready to take up the additional challenges associated with working in a developing country. The successful candidate will be experienced in supervising RC and diamond drilling programs; managing the quality control of the data and ideally have had exposure to resource modeling software.  This role will provide long-term career development opportunities to motivated and capable candidates.

The successful candidate will have at least conversational level English or French (written and verbal) and ideally both; have an awareness of cultural differences and be confident working with people in a developing country to collaboratively solve problems. You will also have a willingness to spend significant periods of time in the field.

Applications and resumes must be submitted in English.
