Rio Tinto Copper Projects (RTCP) has been established to manage a broad range of multi-$B projects in Asia, North and South America. RTCP manages mine sites in locations all across the globe through the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and mining phases. They are responsible for the management of the portfolio of copper projects in Rio Tinto. Key to this management is the identification and quantification of the value associated with the myriad of project development and acquisition decisions.
 
The Underground Prefeasibility Study – Project Manager is a key leadership role in a geographically disperse project matrix organization located at Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. Specific accountabilities are to lead the Oyu Tolgoi underground Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS), liaise with other underground projects, and to develop the scope for the Phase II underground project execution plan.
 
Responsibilities:
The primary of this role is to direct all aspects of the underground PFS including the following:
  • Complete underground mine designs, schedules, capital and operating costs for the PFS.
  • Liaise with other Rio Tinto underground projects and Copper Projects Group Functional Leaders to standardize design and cost elements such as capital costs, workshops, conveyors, etc.
  • Direct study and design engineer (McIntosh Engineering Inc.) to deliver the existing PFS execution plan.
  • Organize 3rd party reviews and Risk Assessments.
  • Develop key relationships to integrate geology, geotechnical and metallurgy design criteria into development plans.
  • Quickly identify critical path mine development and develop the Phase II Project Execution Plan (PEP) for the next stage of underground development.
  • Identify critical path engineering activities and develop detailed engineering PEP.
  • Collaboration with RTCP Functional Leaders.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Production Planning Group to determine optimal designs and strategies.
  • Travel will be periodic (every six to eight weeks) to North America.
Requirements:
  • Four-year college degree. BS or MS Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • 10-15 years of related experience
  • Hard rock surface and/or underground mining and mine engineering experience – essential
  • Practical experience in mine optimization studies – highly regarded
  • Organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of organization
  • Excellent planning, time organization, and problem-solving skills – a must
  • Record of strong safety performance – familiarity implementing established safety systems
  • Motivated and self-directed professional
