Ventilation Superintendent

Barrick Tanzania has the largest Gold Mine portfolio in Tanzania, with three operating gold mines namely Bulyanhulu, North Mara and Tulawaka. It also has an advanced exploration nickel project, Kabanga Nickel and an advanced development gold project, Buzwagi Project.
Reporting Line: Technical Services Manager
Work Schedule: Rotational Status, (8 weeks on 4 weeks off)
The principle duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide leadership and motivation necessary to ensure that both employees and contractors adhere to all polices, standards and procedures during the execution of their duties
- Ensure that primary and secondary ventilation surveys are conducted on a regular basis including airflow measurements, gas and dust tests
- Ensure the maintenance of a computerized ventilation simulation model (Vuma)
- Ensure that construction schedules and drawings for ventilation related infrastructure are prepared timeously
- Maintain a fan registry and be responsible for controlling the issue of auxiliary fans, ordering of new auxiliary fans and the replacement thereof
- Incorporate ventilation design into the short and medium term mining plans
- Ensure the production of ventilation layouts for new mining areas
- Provide training for Mining Engineering and other mining staff in mine ventilation methods
- Provide training and technology transfer, including mine refrigeration procedures, to the Ventilation Department staff
- Troubleshooting and project work as required
The successful applicants must have the following qualifications/skills:
- BSc in Mining Engineering with additional qualifications in Mine Ventilation Engineering
- Minimum of 10 years underground mine ventilation experience including a minimum of 5 years mine cooling and refrigeration experience, preferably including experience with the design and operation of ammonia refrigeration plants
- Exposure to deep level and narrow vein gold mining would be advantageous
- Ventilation simulation software such as Ventism / Vuma
- Microsoft Office Suite
- CAD experience would be advantageous but not compulsory
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to clearly present and discuss schedules and plans with operations personnel and senior management
- Ability to execute project work and to maintain accurate records thereof
- Ability to transfer skills and knowledge
