Geologist - Senior

IOC is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The Company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Îles (Quebec). It also operates a 418 kilometer railroad that links the mine to the port. Reporting to the Project Manager - Exploration, the Senior Geologist will be responsible for supporting all activities relating to the resource assessment programs, lease management, and regional property analysis. The primary function of this role is to ensure that both their team and external contractors and consultants work safely and effectively to ensure the knowledge and confidence in IOC's undeveloped resources is increased. The Senior Geologist is responsible for the direction and management of projects from day-to-day activities through to annual planning, as well as input to strategic planning process.
The successful applicant will:
- Review and interpret geological data; providing recommendations concerning potential of projects; exploration target generation; project management of exploration activities (including drilling, mapping, geophysics); ensure the accurate and complete collection, storage, and synthesis of all geological information; accurate and timely completion of geological models and reports to an agreed standard.
- Complete all legal and statutory reporting requirements as assigned; tracking exploration licence expenditure; contribute to ranking or prioritisation of prospect areas;
- Participate in annual planning and budget process; planning, liaison and coordination of project activities including requisite approvals and cost management; involvement in capital and operating expenditure applications as appropriate.
- Manage and review the performance of staff, external contractors and consultants in terms of safety, cost, and technical effectiveness; manage, communicate and improve project and department HSE systems and practices; ensure that personnel within team are appropriately trained; provide energetic team leadership to a high ethical standard; actively encourage teamwork and communication within and between relevant stakeholders as appropriate; involvement in recruitment for the department; champion key technical projects, standards, and guidelines.
Education:
Required
- B Sc. Geology or similar discipline
- Professional registration as a P. Geo or P. Eng or equivalent;
- Valid driver's licence
Experience
Essential:
- Minimum of five to ten years geological experience in the mining industry (including exploration experience);
- Leadership experience in small to medium sized teams;
- Sound project management skills;
- Strong 3D visualisation and geological modelling skills (preferably in Vulcan);
- Good working knowledge of Labrador or similar environments;
- Excellent written and verbal skills in English.
Desirable:
- Experience in the iron ore industry;
- Strong Vulcan, MapInfo and acQuire software skills;
- Experience with ice drilling and helicopter assisted programs
- Conversational French.
