Deputy / Shift Boss

Role Purpose:
The purpose of the role of Deputy is to deputize a shift of miners and be responsible for the production and safety of the mining shift.

Summary Points:
The Deputy issues instructions and delegates work accordingly to get the maximum amount of work done during the shift.

Experience Required to Perform the role: (may include experiences that would help the employee to perform the role)
·         5+ years mining experience at the face.

·         Experience in supervising and managing groups of miners Essential
·         Experience in training workers in meeting the required standards on safety and production Essential
·         Experience in applying corrective action when required. Essential
·         Experience in ventilating and de-gassing Essential

Special Requirements for the Role: Competencies / Skills / Knowledge
A Deputy will have all of the competencies of an experienced miner as well as the following:
·         Leadership qualities
·         Ability to supervise a group of workers
·         Ability to issue instructions and have the ability to delegate work accordingly to ensure efficiency from the shift
·         Ability to resolve conflict in the workplace
·         Apply and maintain safety standards
·         Carry out work as required
·         Knowledgeable on plan reading and ventilation circuits underground
·         Ability to set high housekeeping standards and the maintenance of them
·         Ability to drive production to meet and exceed operational expectations and targets

Role Description:
The role will report to the Underviewer/Shift Co-coordinator. It is the front line management role / supervisor position required to engender and enhance a culture of safety and risk management productivity, environmental and statutory compliance, of the area under the Deputy’s control.

The key factors will be leading the area to ensure that production targets are achieved and exceeded in a safe environment and to mentor, encourage and lead the team of miners and the equipment under your direct control.

The general functions performed by a Deputy are the following:
·         Manage the rostered shift to ensure that there are enough workers to undertake the work.
·         Undertake regular ventilation audits of the ventilation district pertinent to the district
·         Keeping roadways on line and grade according to permit to mine
·         Cable work installation and reclamation and working with compressed air lines
·         Installation of pipe lines and installation of flumes
·         Cleaning up and removal of scrap material
·         Set up and operate a variety of surface or underground mining machinery
·         Construct underground tunnels and passageways
·         Scale loose rock from walls and roof
·         Inspect mine shafts
·         Install air ventilation shafts in underground mines
·         Operate transport hoists through mine shafts
·         Set fuses and detonate explosives
·         Install roof supports in underground mines
·         Perform routine maintenance and report faulty equipment
·         Complete record sheets of work auctioned
·         Ensure health and safety standards are maintained
