Experienced Miner / Miner

·         Role Title: Experienced Miner
·         Reporting to: Deputy

Role Purpose:
To operate machinery and equipment to extract and remove coal from underground mines under the guidance and direction of the Deputy and underviewer.

Summary Points:
·         A miner must be able to operate some or all of the following machinery in the mine in a safe manner
·         Driftrunner
·         Brumby
·         Juganaut
·         Continuous Miner
·         Road Header
·         Hydro Monitor
·         Pnuematic powered hand tools
·         Must be able to do basic repairs and fault finding on the above machinery and equipment

Qualifications required to perform the role:
·         Approved handlers certificate of competency Essential
·         Gas testing certificate Essential
·         National Certificate in Extractive Industry / National Diploma in Extractive Industries Essential
·         At least three years experience operating as a miner at the face. Essential

Special Requirements for the Role: Competencies / Skills / Knowledge
·         Machinery Operation – Be able to competently operate at least one of the three major machinery types used in the extraction of coal
·         Roof support and strata control competencies – a miner must be able to instill roof and rib support according to the mine standard in a safe manner.
·         Extending and relocation of infra-structure services. A miner must be able to move and relocate machinery and equipment in the mine without causing any damage to the plant involved.
·         Ventilation – a miner must be able to take basic ventilation readings and have the required knowledge of what safe operating volumes are for the mine.
·         Safety – a miner must be knowledgeable in hazard identification and risk assessment or job safety analysis. Knowledge of the health and safety regulations for working on a mine site.
·         Knowledge of different mining methods and how a mine works
·         Knowledge of how to handle explosives and blasting
·         Good spatial awareness skills
·         Excellent listening and communication skills and good reflexes

The general functions performed by a miner are the following:
·         Cable work installation and reclamation and working with compressed air lines
·         Installation of pipe lines and installation of flumes
·         Cleaning up and removal of scrap material
·         Set up and operate a variety of surface or underground mining machinery
·         Construct underground tunnels and passageways
·         Scale loose rock from walls and roof
·         Inspect mine shafts
·         Install air ventilation shafts in underground mines
·         Operate transport hoists through mine shafts
·         Set fuses and detonate explosives
·         Install roof supports in underground mines
·         Perform routine maintenance and report faulty equipment
·         Complete record sheets of work auctioned
·         Ensure health and safety standards are maintained.

·         able to remain calm in emergencies
·         able to work well under pressure
·         comfortable working in an underground situation, and in cramped conditions
·         able to act on their own initiative, when necessary
·         physically able to tolerate demanding work
·         responsible and disciplined
·         efficient and practical
·         able to follow instructions
·         ability to manage shift work
