Job Description

- We are actively seeking to fill a Wildlife Biologist position based out of our Honolulu Office. This position will conduct field investigations and biological monitoring and prepare stand-alone biological resources reports, biological assessments under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), Habitat Conservation Plans (HCP), and CEQA/NEPA documents. A thorough working knowledge of and at least three years’ experience with Sections 7 and 10 of the ESA is required. This position will report to the Office Director and is a regular, full-time hourly position. Pay will be based on individual qualifications and experience.
- Candidates must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10 miles per day in hot humid weather, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds. Ability to take initiative, resolve problems and ensure tasks are completed in the most effective manner. Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques.
- Ability to work as member of a team and independently to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner.
Required Skills
Responsibilities for the Biologist position include:
- Conduct surveys for sensitive habitats and species, including general surveys for report writing, focused or protocol-level surveys, and pre-construction surveys
- Work closely, as a member of a team, with resource and regulatory agency staffs throughout planning and execution of natural resources studies;
- Obtain and review existing reports and other documents for materials to be included in documents;
- Peer review biological reports from other consultants;
- Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools during fieldwork and report writing;
- Collect and analyze field data to support report-writing, land use planning, CEQA/NEPA documentation, and permitting;
- Monitor project areas during construction or other activities that could negatively affect sensitive species or habitats;
- Prepare stand-alone biological resources reports, biological assessments, HCPs, and biological portions of CEQA/NEPA documents;
- Provide recommendations for mitigation measures, monitoring, and permitting specific to biological resources;
- Collaborate with clients, SWCA staff, and resource and regulatory agency staffs to obtain permits and entitlements;
- Provide support for obtaining biological permits;
- Work closely with [Company] staff in both natural and cultural resources to promote [Company] business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values.
Required Experience
- Minimum of BA or BS in biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management or related field.
- Applicants should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in related fieldwork, preferably in Hawaii or the Pacific Rim. Candidate should have a good working knowledge of federal and Hawaii laws (i.e., NEPA, CEQA, ESAs, 343 HRS) and knowledge of Hawaiian or tropical insular flora and fauna. Candidate should have demonstrated competency with statistical analysis of biological data.
- FWS permit(s) to handle endangered species is a plus.
- Must have excellent writing and data recordation skills.
