Yard Laborer
Summary
Position Purpose:
- After successfully completing job training and safety program, employee will be prepared to manually unload / handle freight, stock and/or other materials as needed and as relate to the aggregate distribution industry; operate and maintain some vehicles, machinery, and other equipment used at the distribution terminal.
- Worker will spend most of their time outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
- This position works on the rail daily.
- Because trains operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, employee may be required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays during peak distribution times.
- This work tends to be repetitive and physically demanding. Worker may lift and carry heavy objects, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in awkward positions. Some jobs expose workers to fumes, odors, loud noise, or dangerous machinery. Climbing up and down and getting off railcars is strenuous and can be dangerous. To avoid injury, these workers wear safety clothing, such as gloves and hard hats, steel toe shoes, and devices to protect their eyes, mouth or hearing.
- Worker must have good hearing, eyesight, and color vision, as well as good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and mechanical aptitude.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities:
- Adhere to the company’s general safety plan
- Follow directions given by Yard Manager and/or Yard Foreman or person who is being helped.
- Assist Yard Manager and/or Yard Foreman in coordinating materials handling and equipment usage.
- Be able to perform the following specific tasks:
- Operate general construction equipment at the terminal when given training.
- Required to lift 50 pounds.
- Complete miscellaneous jobs according to instructions given.
- Police grounds (grass, weed, fences, gates areas and rails/rail-ties).
- Responsible for up keep of tools and work areas.
- Follow ALL safety regulations.
Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of 8th grade, graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma preferred.
- Experience: Construction experience is preferred, but not mandatory.
- Technical Expertise: To perform the job effectively worker must be familiar with the duties of the worker they are helping as well as with the materials, tools, and machinery they use.
- Personal traits: Must be reliable, hardworking and able to work in a team environment
- Must have valid driver’s license.
