Laboratory Metallurgist

Summary:
  • This position is responsible for various tasks relative to the day-to-day operations of the Metallurgical portion of the Laboratory, as it pertains to production for the Plant, metallurgical experiments and investigations, and the quality activities mandated by the [Company] quality system, customer specifications and Nadcap requirements.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of metallographer’s day to day activities
  • Review and disposition of metallographer rejections with Metallurgists.
  • Prioritization of tasks in event of overload/backlog.
  • Developing metallographer awareness of [Company]  products and customer requirements.
  • Develop and implement metallographer interactions with LIMS/STAR systems.
  • Implement training program for metallographic technicians
  • Conduct laboratory projects and investigations beyond normal production tests
  • Design, coordinate with logistics planners, conduct and report non-standard experiments and tests as requested by Metallurgists or Supervision.
  • Monitor progress of specific MPE’s through laboratory and assist metallurgists with compilation of data.
  • Liaise, coordinate and progress work with HTL and other external laboratories where Toronto does not have capability/experience.
  • Assist with data extraction and statistical analysis in support of the Metallurgists.
  • Continuous improvement of metallographic standards; procedures and techniques
  • Champion the development of quantitative image analysis techniques and digital image capability/storage.  Train laboratory personnel in usage.
  • Review and improve laboratory metallographic standards and procedures.
  • Maintaining compliance with customer/regulatory body/accreditation requirements
  • Coordinate with QA and Lab Manager and report against customer/Nadcap requirements & programs; round robin, proficiency testing, etc.
  • Assist with hosting audits and responding to audit findings.
  • Comment upon customer specifications relative to product/laboratory capabilities.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to other lab improvement activities outside of the metallographic area when requested.
  • Support the plant calibration program when requested.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, LIMS/Star; PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Titanium metallurgy, destructive testing methodology, micro/macro-structural interpretation.
  • Familiarity with customer specifications and national standards for titanium

Reports To:

  • Manager, Laboratory and NDT (Toronto Q&T)
  • Supervises:
  • Metallographic Technicians (C&T union personnel)

Relationships:

  • Toronto metallurgists, operations personnel, lab schedulers; HTL research staff.
  • Competencies:  (List Specific Competencies for Required Success)
  • Detail oriented, able to handle multiple tasks, possess good verbal and technical report writing skills, the ability to function efficiently in a demanding production support team

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • BS Metallurgy or Materials Engineering/Science preferred.  4-6 years of industrial or laboratory experience required with knowledge of titanium metallurgy, specifications and standards and production techniques

Physical Requirements: 

  • Standard office environment, ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods. 
  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity for plant visits.
  • Laboratory environment including chemical handling and exposure. 
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
