Process Metallurgist

Summary:
  • This position is responsible for the continual improvement of the yield, cost, FTP and capability of the products manufactured by the [Company] Toronto production department in which the CI Metallurgist operates. 

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the conversion routes are optimized for cost and operational efficiency of the applicable Toronto production department, including:
  • Monitoring conversion cost and including it as a primary variable to plan the process routes.
  • Managing Projects and MPE’s designed to reduce costs, increase yield, increase First Time Pass (FTP) and/or increase throughput.
  • Working with Accounting to define and measure cost savings.
  • Define Product Capability
  • Implement systems to measure and report product capability for all critical variables including yield, dimensions, and all key specification requirements.
  • Manage Projects and MPE’s to improve product capability.
  • New Products/Processes
  • Coordinate the introduction of new products or processes into standard production.
  • Work with Research and Development, Sales, Operations and Metallurgy to develop the new products/processes.
  • Liaise with Chief Metallurgist to review non-standard and poor process capability orders and plan new process routes.
  • Work with the OSC to develop new process routes.
  • Provide Continuous Improvement Leadership:
  • Provide leadership in the project selection process. 
  • Present regular reports and drive projects to completion within assigned deadlines.
  • Implement the appropriate metrics and associated data collection to drive improvements.
  • Educate personnel in Continuous Improvement and Cost Reduction.
  • Facilitate communication and achievement of company and plant goals and objectives

Additional Responsibilities

  • Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of titanium metallurgy, and metal working operations
  • Knowledge of aerospace and industrial material specifications
  • Familiarity with laboratory and nondestructive testing methods
  • Familiarity with basic statistical techniques and analysis tools (e.g Minitab)

  • Education/Experience Requirements:
  • Four year Bachelors degree in a metals or materials discipline
  • Five years’ experience in a metals processing industry with titanium processing experience preferred.
  • Physical Requirements:   Ability to work in an industrial surrounding.
  • Environment:  Office and industrial plants
