Newcastle Upon Tyne
Salary £30,000 - £40,000 depending on experience
An exciting opportunity has now arisen for a Mechanical Design Engineer to become part of a supportive team environment to produce practical new designs and to cover all aspects of the production of relatively complex one-off machines. Although the practical design remains central to the job, this is a varied role with varying degrees of responsibility and includes differing types of tasks which range from initial design to machine commissioning, perhaps including project management and customer visits from time to time.
You will be responsible for producing conceptual designs from process definitions and layout designs of mechanical/hydraulic machinery. You will work in multi-discipline project teams on specific aspects of the machine design and will be involved in the build, commissioning, test and trials of new build machines, which can involve working offsite, abroad or offshore. Working with control and software engineers, you will ensure the correct interfacing between different aspects of machines.
Whilst being a specialist in one of the following, the successful candidate will also have a good working knowledge of at least one of the other engineering disciplines: mechanical, structural, hydraulic, geotechnics, maritime, nuclear and materials.
It is essential that the successful candidate has a minimum of Upper 2nd class degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 3 years previous post graduate experience in a design role, preferably of low volume bespoke machines. As well as having practical experience in this sector, an enthusiasm for engineering is essential.
As the job role will involve travel from time to time, it is imperative that the successful candidate has a flexible approach. It is important that you have the ability to work either as part of a team or on your own initiative, in high pressure situations, whilst working to project targets and demonstrating at all times a willingness to take on responsibility.
