Job Specification

Business Performance and -Operations          

• Provide specialised competencies for the delivery of professional geotechnical services.  
• Translate discipline strategy into systems, structures and processes to support its implementation. 
• Effective use of geological and geotechnical (soil - and rock mechanics) standards, principles and practice for the design of stable mine excavations. 
• Conduct complex analysis of geological environment and geomechanical properties of soil and rock for optimisation of mine excavations to ensure economical, yet safe mining operations. 
• Increase awareness of technology advancements to ensure Exxaro has access to appropriate cutting edge technology to meet business deliverables and can continue to expand technical base to access new areas of business.  
• Provide inputs and technical leadership in Geosciences discipline meetings and draft technical publications as required. 
• Supervise day-to-day operational aspects of a project and scope as necessary.

Compliance, Governance and Assurance        

• Implement controls to ensure legal compliance within designated area. 
• Implement controls to assure legal compliance of Exxaro BU’s with regard to ground control related aspects (relevant mandatory Codes of Practice in terms of the MHSA). 
• Implement effective SHE management systems for own job or for the section. 
• Recognise, understand and take action to manage risks that can impact on the outputs of own job and the section.  
• Provide and participate in governance systems for best practice.  
• Adhere to the requirements of quality management systems.
• Consulting and Project Services Adhere to Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Standards, eg. Invoicing on schedule and delivery of milestone on schedule.   Develop and utilise simulation tools.   
• Ensure document control via centralised capturing system specified by Exxaro.  
• Conduct technical evaluations of relevant projects in various developmental stages, as well as active mine offered to the company by applying appropriate evaluation methods and project management principles.
• Work in a project team so that results are delivered on time and on budget to support mining operations in BU’s and adopt high project management standards.

Financial Management

• Financial authorisations based on agreed limit (to be set by Line Manager).  
• Manage geotechnical project budgets (consultants, drilling contracts, laboratory contracts).
• Projects and CI Updated knowledge of geological and geotechnical best practice.  
• Participate in investigations of improvement opportunities and service issues to enable the development of solutions toward optimising applicable processes / systems. 
• Participate in the evaluation of discipline-specific standards, principles and practice to enable planning, design and implementation of engineering outcomes that support the business strategy.     
• Participate in the implementation of appropriate quality management systems to ensure delivery of high quality projects and engineering outcomes.  
• Contribute to the development and implementation of an appropriate approach to knowledge management for the discipline in line with business needs.

• Ensure quality of service for delivery of Geotechnical Services and expert consultation, in a manner that is aligned to the services framework and consistent with customer agreements.  
• Identify service performance improvement opportunities associated with area of responsibility.  
• Contribute to gathering of customer feedback as required by Group Manager, Service Management to ensure that customers within Exxaro are satisfied with the delivery of geotechnical services.
