Project Engineer II (Mechanical Maintenance Engineer)

Job Description

  • Provides the technical expertise on all matters of Maintenance Excellence of all process equipment including mechanical, electrical and instrument / control equipment. Recommends needed improvements to Operations management in the area of equipment maintenance including philosophies, strategies and best maintenance practices. This position focuses on sustaining or returning equipment to current performance standards versus the improvement of equipment performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor equipment performance and trouble shoot equipment problems
  • Apply engineering theory, practices, and principles to lead equipment root cause failure analysis
  • Work with maintenance supervision, planners and mechanics to develop equipment repair procedures
  • Provide technical input to the Maintenance coordinator and Operations management for determining the criticality of scheduling equipment down for needed maintenance
  • Participate as a member of mechanical turn-around/shutdown teams providing input into needed equipment inspection and repair procedures
  • Track and interpret maintenance metrics for Operations leaders, recommending needed improvements where warranted
  • Support implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) by identifying and supporting autonomous maintenance done by operators, where appropriate

Support capital projects by:

  • Participating in equipment selection and layout to optimize “maintainability”.
  • Promoting consistency by standardizing equipment
  • Providing technical expertise for installation, check-out, maintenance procedures and o start-up of all new critical equipment.
  • Assuring that necessary spare parts are identified and inventoried
  • Identify training needs for mechanics and others supporting the maintenance function
  • Participate in PSM activities as defined by site manuals and practices, mainly focused in mechanical integrity (MI) and quality assurance (QA)
  • Participate in maintenance and reliability networks and share best practices, successes and failures.
  • Participate in the interviewing, hiring and mentoring of new maintenance co-ops, interns, and engineers.
  • Participate in continuing education, professional organizations and maintenance conferences to keep current on and evaluate new technologies for their applicability.
  • Develop specific maintenance competency areas (e.g. P&S, shutdown execution, PPM technologies, etc.) and participate in SBU, Corporate and external networks/forums as appropriate to maximize contribution and qualify for professional progression up to that of a DuPont fellow.

Basic Job Requirements

  • BS degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical or Instrument depending on their work focus); alternatively, 8-10 years of maintenance work experience and training in the refining/petrochemical industry
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and implement multiple concurrent projects.
  • Able to navigate and extract data from SAP-PM (or the specific CMMS used)
  • Understanding of business performance measures and critical to quality issues
  • Understands the Process Safety Management (PSM) process particularly Management of Change (MOC)

Basic understanding of the principles of:

  • Maintenance work management process including work identification, planning, scheduling, accomplishment, work documentation, maintenance materials management
  • PPM, basic equipment reliability, contract maintenance and maintenance training
  • Rotating equipment and alignment techniques
  • Materials Science and physical failure analysis
  • Instrumentation and process control
  • Predictive techniques for fixed and rotating equipment and instrumentation such as: Vibration
  • Analysis, tribology, Non-Destructive Testing, Thermography, etc.
  • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
  • Uptime and how to extract data out of the system
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and how to lead RCFA teams
  • Industry and Corporate Engineering codes and their application
  • ISO and other related quality standards
  • Cost/capital analysis and justification

Other Job Requirements

  • Strong leadership capability
  • Good communication and presentation skills (both oral and written)
  • Good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with the ability to influence managers, peers, and mechanics; able to take a “hands-on” approach with operators and mechanics to get things done.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment – work well with wage roll and exempts
  • Proven strong contributor with the capability to work independently
  • Good personal computer and software skills in Microsoft Office, particularly MS Excel®

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chemical/Refinery experience preferred
  • Maintenance Engineers are encouraged to get CMRP certified (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional)
  • Six Sigma certified as Black Belt or Green Belt
