Job Specification

Position Overview:

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance and implementation of the required legal safety standards and procedures for the respective site, in line with local laws and the company standards.
  • Design, implement and manage the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Plan and related programs for all sites to ensure that the company complies with all the relevant safety and occupational health legislation.
  • Conduct awareness and induction programs relating to safety.
  • Ensure monthly safety audits are conducted, to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure all work is constructed and conducted safely.
  • Ensure all statutory appointments are done and kept current in terms of the relevant Acts

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and implement the Site HSE Plans.
  • Provide input into the development and vetting of all site operating procedures for engineering personnel to ensure all work practices are constructed and conducted safely and ensure all hazards are identified and controlled.
  • Provide safety awareness training for all site-based workers. 
  • This will include toolbox talks, safety inductions, awareness on safety procedures etc.
  • Monitor and report all unsafe situations/site hazards and ensure that these are quickly and appropriately rectified.
  • Report on accidents which occur on any sites or offices and follow up with the necessary procedures and reporting to the necessary authorities.
  • Administrate the company safety statistics in line with industry norms and statutory requirements.
  • Manage the work of the Safety Officer(s) and the Site Safety Representative(s).
  • In the event of emergency evacuations or emergency incidents, and emergency team will be put together, under the direction of the Construction Manager. 
  • The Safety Manager will be on this team and fulfil all functions as assigned by the Construction

Critical Competencies:

Education & experience:

  • Complete high school education (Matric certificate).
  • A relevant qualification from a recognised and accredited academic institute, such as NOSA or SAMREC.
  • Any additional health and safety qualifications will be a distinct advantage.
  • At least 10 years' health and safety management experience on mining and heavy industrial construction sites.

Technical:

  • Experience in the mining and construction environment.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office.

Behavioural:

  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to respond promptly and professionally to requests and issues.
  • Ability to communicate verbal instructions clearly.
  • Ability to act calmly in situations of stress/danger.
  • Ability to interact with multi-national individuals/teams in Africa.

Other requirements:

  • Ability to travel in Africa.
  • This is head office based position overseeing all projects in South Africa and Africa. 
  • The HSE Manager will be required to visit all sites on regular monthly intervals.
