Staff Scientist I (Industrial Hygienist)

Key Responsibilities

  • Successful candidates will be responsible for monitoring hazardous materials abatement activities (asbestos and lead-based paint) on-site at building modernization projects in Washington, DC.

Work will include:

  • Collection of ambient air samples, daily on-site analysis of asbestos samples, and detailed inspections of engineering controls / dust control measures.
  • Work will include accurate daily and weekly reporting to abatement or general contractors, on-site client rep and the [Company] project manager
  • Required professional training courses will be provided as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities may include: performing industrial hygiene surveys, noise studies, air sampling, ventilation measurements, radiation surveys, chemical inventories, respiratory fit testing, confined space evaluations and environmental sampling. Training on additional responsibilities will be provided as needed.
  • Project schedule will likely require weekend / evening work.

Basic/Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) or closely related environmental science field.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must have excellent technical and communication skills.
  • Must pass drug test, background check and motor vehicle check.
  • Position requires interaction with construction contractors and client interaction on behalf of [Company]
  • Position will require proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which may include a respirator periodically.
  • Employee must be willing to enroll in [Company] medical monitoring program.

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Training and / or experience in the performance of Hazardous Building Materials and Indoor Air Quality assessments, sample collection and data interpretation, and reporting.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in ESOH or closely related field
  • Maintain current certification / licensure / documentation of training to perform the following activities in Virginia and District of Columbia, where applicable:
  • Asbestos Inspection / Project Monitoring / Supervision (includes NIOSH 582 or equivalent)
  • Lead-Based Paint Inspection (including X-ray Fluorescence manufacturer training)

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand/work for up to 8-hours/day.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment.
