GIS Specialist

  • We are seeking a mid- to senior-level GIS Specialist for our Houston office to support current and anticipated workloads in both our natural and cultural resource programs in Houston and the Gulf Coast. This is a temporary, full-time hourly position with the potential to become permanent. Pay is based on individual qualifications and experience.

Required Skills

  • Help build and maintain GIS/cartographic capabilities to support natural and cultural resources programs in Houston;
  • Create, maintain, and QA/QC geospatial data sets using the latest version of ArcGIS;
  • Conduct high level spatial analysis of geographic data sets;
  • Mentor less experienced members of the GIS team (team building, skills/competencies alignment, coaching for development, performance management, and conflict resolution);
  • Coordinate with Project Managers on workload management;
  • Coordinate with other GIS staff regarding work assignments and workload allocation;
  • Integrate CAD and GPS data with ArcGIS;
  • Post-process GPS data using Trimble Pathfinder Office;
  • Assist staff with field GPS training and data collection;
  • Correct data errors in geographic data sets;
  • Heads-up digitizing, as needed;
  • Create sophisticated cartographic map products using ArcGIS;
  • Deliver data sets, metadata, and cartographic productions to [Company] Project Managers and clients;
  • Conduct field work on limited basis;
  • Assist other [Company] offices and GIS analysts as needed.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in geography, planning, ecology or related field with an emphasis in GIS. Master’s degree a plus
  • At least three years professional work beyond university. Pipeline or other significant large scale linear project experience required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding of map elements and symbology
  • Demonstrated experience with integrating AutoCAD data into ArcGIS
  • Demonstrated experience with GPS technology, field data collection, and GIS integration
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate disparate data sets into GIS
  • Ability to interpret technical planning maps including AutoCAD and MicroStation drawings
  • Detail-oriented and a demonstrated self-starter, problem-solver, and team player with professional demeanor and attitude
  • Ability to multi-task and take written and verbal direction and take the initiative to perform tasks with moderate supervision
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality is expected
  • Infrequent travel to attend GIS related conferences or classes and assist other offices may be required. Some relocation expense reimbursement may be available.
  • Background capabilities in natural or cultural resources management is a plus, with specific experience related to pipeline or other large-scale linear projects. Prior knowledge and experience with ArcIMS, web applications, network anlaysis, and/or application development is a plus.
