The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is seeking to appoint a
Science Communications Fellow
The EGU (www.egu.eu) is Europe's premier geosciences union, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the geosciences and the planetary and space sciences for the benefit of humanity, worldwide. The EGU has more than 11,000 members, a General Assembly that attracts over 10,000 scientists each year, a diverse portfolio of 14 scientific journals that use an innovative "open access" format, a number of thematic meetings, and education and outreach activities.
EGU Fellowships offer young scientists the opportunity to gain experience in science management and communication in a large scientific union through a targeted assignment in the EGU Executive Office in Munich, Germany. Fellows are strategically deployed to develop new initiatives and capabilities for long-term use by the EGU. Fellowships last six months and can be extended for a further six months.
We intend to appoint a Fellow who will work mainly on communication activities related to the EGU Newsletter. He or she will also assist the EGU Media and Communications officer in developing media-related and science information communications between the EGU and its membership, the working media, and the public at large.
The successful applicant will have an academic degree in the Earth, space or planetary sciences or related topics, experience in written public science communication, and an expert command of English. Strong preference will be given to candidates with a PhD degree, particularly those who wish to return to a career in scientific research upon termination of the Fellowship. The Fellow will work under the direction of the EGU Media and Communications Officer initially for six months starting in January 2012. Remuneration is according to the German public service pay scale and can be up to E13 TV-L, depending on expertise and experience.
