Geomaticist Intern

Position Summary:

  • Atkins seeks an energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter to join our Vestavia Hills, AL staff as a Geomaticist Intern. In this role you will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience on land survey projects.

Typical duties and responsibilities of this position are:

  • Performs simple math calculations.
  • Operates technical surveying instruments such as Total Station, Theodolite, and level.
  • Sets up and operates Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
  • Uses field data collector for storing measurements and attributes for topographic features.
  • Compiles basic types of field notes and performs basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ensures that (1) an adequate reserve supply of consumable material such as stakes, hubs, iron rods, nails, paint and flagging is maintained in the supply storage areas at the office; (2) survey vehicles contain an adequate supply of equipment and materials for the day's operations; and (3) the survey vehicles parking area, equipment and supply storage areas at the office are kept in a neat and orderly fashion.

Requirements

Job Duties:

  • Operates technical surveying instruments such as Total Station, Theodolite, and level.
  • Sets up and operates a level to measure or establish elevations.
  • Sets up and operates Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
  • Uses field data collector for storing measurements and attributes for topographic features.
  • Maintains familiarity with the various types of surveying instruments, including maintenance, checking and handling procedures.
  • Records the results of data acquisition and performs computations from field notes to verify accuracy.
  • May assist a Surveyor or Geomaticist in compiling field notes and electronic data.
  • Must include extensive travel to field sites locally and nationally.

Education & Experience requirements

  • Education – High school or equivalent trade school, with strong math courses or supplemental math training preferred. Enrollment in a 4-year college level Geomatics or Surveying and Mapping program is acceptable if courses do not interfere with travel.
  • Experience – Minimum one year of experience on a field survey crew.
  • Special Skills – Knowledge of the use of Total Stations, GPS Units, and electronic Data Collectors is beneficial.
  • Travel - This position requires extensive travel. Durations may range from 1 week to 4 weeks per trip.
