Job Description
- United States Steel Corporation has an immediate opening for Quality Engineers at our facility in Gary, IN.
The Quality Engineer will perform the following functions:
- Administers the U.S. Steel safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the operating facility;
- Provides the producing facility with technical and quality systems support, including rejection analysis, process improvement recommendations and development of new process technology;
- Applies education/technical knowledge and utilizes problem solving skills and continuous improvement knowledge in the processing of steel;
- Applies working knowledge of metallographic sample preparation, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive spectroscopy and working knowledge of metallurgy;
- Provides technical service to both internal and external customers in matters relating to the chemical, physical and metallurgical characteristics of process and products and quality control;
- Interprets internal and external customer requirements, establishes control manufacturing methods, participates in product and process development, evaluates and controls raw materials, establishes quality standards and related control systems, assists customers in selecting proper steels, and solves fabrication problems;
- Utilizes management skills to direct and coordinate the efforts of employees assigned to the operating facility to produce the highest quality steel at the lowest cost;
- Develops and reviews various quality reports, conducts various quality meetings, performs daily audits to ensure operation is running within defined operation/quality parameters and procedures, etc.; and
- Learns and understands the steelmaking process.
- Due to the nature of our business, our facilities operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year. Therefore, this position may require extended hours, weekend and/or holiday work.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, material science, chemical engineering or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience in metallurgy preferred
- Demonstrated communication, teamwork, organization, leadership, problem solving and planning skills
