Objectives

  • The Mine Coordinator/Engineer will provide daily oversight and technical support to ensure mine production requirements are met, in the short and long term, efficiently and safely, and within MSHA requirements.  Assist mine manager in meeting mine production, planning quality, budgetary, and safety objectives.

Nature and Scope

  • Responsible for effective coordination of daily mining operations to ensure multiple production shifts and maintenance activities are working synergistically   towards common mine objectives.
  • Responsible for short term and long term mine planning.
  • Responsible for mine control and monthly mapping.
  • Responsible for mine ventilation planning, measurement, and control.
  • Responsible for maintaining MSHA required mine maps and evacuation plans.
  • Responsible for mine geomechanics monitoring.
  • Support operations in ground control optimization.
  • Support operations to optimize mine production and maintenance practices.
  • Support and/or participate in the mine improvement groups, committees, mine rescue program, etc.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Ensure the mine operates efficiently and synergistically.  Act as interface between multiple production supervisors and between production and maintenance to ensure all phases of mine operations are working towards common goals and objectives.
  • Work with operations and maintenance supervisors to plan daily activities and special projects and assist in procuring necessary materials.
  • Work closely with Mine Manager to ensure production and budgetary objectives are met.
  • Ensure short and long term mine plan supports mine production requirements in terms of tonnage and chemistry.  Use CTS as a resource, as required, and ensure their concurrence with plans.
  • Oversee mine survey activities and update mine maps on a monthly basis.
  • Reconcile mine tonnage estimates from mine mapping with production reports.
  • Oversee month end mine stores inventory and issue monthly usage report to Mine Manager.
  • Update MSHA required mine maps and evacuation plans as required.
  • Ensure that the mine ventilation system properly controls levels of gases, dust, and diesel particulate in the mine atmosphere.  Work with mine operations to implement changes in ventilation controls as required.
  • Perform routine ventilation measurements and logging as required by MSHA.
  • Develop and implement a geomechanics monitoring plan by working with CTS and consultants as required, and maintain routine monitoring thereafter.
  • Oversee compliance with mine methane issues.
  • Optimize all phases of mining operations.
  • Optimize reliability and maintenance through technical solutions by supporting studies and implementing projects.
  • Assist with MSHA new miner and refresher training as required.
  • Be proficient with MAXIMO and place orders for materials and services in accordance with budget and forecast costs.
  • Act as relief Mine Supervisor and Mine Manager as required.
  • Provide technical input for the mine TYTP.
  • Lead mine Technical Improvement Group, participate in mine Continuous Improvement Group.
  • Support the mine rescue program.

Mine Manager’s Expectations

  • The Mine Coordinator/Engineer provides the global eyes and ears for the mining operation.  He is expected to work closely with the Mine Supervisors providing them with support, guidance and even training to accomplish their jobs in the safest, most cost effective and efficient manner possible.  He must ensure both supervisors are working towards common goals and objectives for the greater good of the mine as a whole.  The Coordinator/Engineer is expected to work closely with the Mine Maintenance supervisor to make a production and maintenance seamless and synergistic. The Mine Coordinator/Engineer needs to look past the day-to-day issues and analyze the overall operation.  He needs to take the initiative to propose changes and to work with the appropriate plant personnel or subcontractors to effect those changes.  The Mine Coordinator/Engineer should be on a never-ending operations improvement campaign.  He needs to be diplomatic yet assertive enough to convince the Mine and Maintenance Supervisors that improvements are needed and dedicated enough to help them implement those improvements.  The mine Coordinator/Engineer must keep the Manager informed of what is going on in the mine, both good and bad.  His input during weekly mine planning meetings is critical to our having an efficient, well-organized operation.

Qualifications

  • Requires a BS in Mining Engineering, or another engineering field with significant underground mining experience.
  • Significant underground mining experience, particularly in shaft mines, with a history of both engineering and supervisory/management experience.
