Environmental Specialist (Mine Closure)

A well established company in the Mining industry is looking for Environmental Specialists.

  • Your excellent relevant experience in assessing costs in mine closure is required.
  • Some key responsibilities include assessing items for decommissioning, demolition and closure as well as implementing a Health and Safety plan.

Job Specification

Main duties/ responsibilities:

  • For the mine to be able to comply with the conditions of the approved EMPR's, the consultants must assess, amongst others, the following aspects:
  • Items to be assessed for decommissioning, demolition and closure shall include, amongst others;
  • The removal of unwanted infrastructure;
  • Opencast rehabilitation including the final voids and ramps;
  • Dismantling of processing plant and related structures (including overland conveyors and powerlines);
  • Demolition of steel buildings and structures;
  • Demolition of reinforced concrete buildings and structures;
  • Rehabilitation of access roads;
  • Demolition and rehabilitation of electrified railway lines;
  • Demolition and rehabilitation of non-electrified railway lines;
  • Demolition of housing and/or administration facilities;
  • Sealing of shafts, audits and inclines;
  • Rehabilitation of overburden and spoils;
  • Rehabilitation of processing waste deposits and evaporation ponds (basic, salt-producing waste);
  • Rehabilitation of processing waste deposits and evaporation ponds (acidic, metal-rich waste);
  • Rehabilitation of subsided areas;
  • General surface rehabilitation;
  • Long term stability on river diversions;
  • Removal of security fencing and construction of standard farm type fence;
  • Water management-Pollution control dams, bypass canals, drains and pipelines;
  • Water treatment plants including desalination;
  • 2 to 3 years of maintenance and aftercare of all rehabilitated areas;
  • Specialist studies;
  • Pipeline, power lines, telephone, transport and land purchase;
  • Engineering and management costs for executing closure activities; and
  • Mine closure administration costs.
  • Compilation and submission of the 3 draft reports for Mine staff to comment; and
  • Compilation and submission of the 3 final report to the three entities.
  • Quality Requirements: The Consultant is required to provide details of its quality and other formal certifications and may include quality, environmental or other certification.
  • Health and Safety Plan: All consultants who visit the mining sites must conform to the mine's Health and safety requirements.
