Regional Sustainability Manager

An extractives organisation with global operations, seeks a Regional Sustainability Manager to run and maintain the environmental and social performance of a mining exploration project in West Africa. With a strong focus on community engagement, the role will also encompass areas of health and safety along with ensuring the site’s environmental compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Essential :

  • Degree in Mining/Engineering/Environment
  • 5 - 8 years community services and sustainability development experience
  • Community Project implementation experience
  • Community Networking , communication and relationship building

Experience in one of the following disciplines :

  • Project Management
  • Financial management
  • LED Strategies & Policies
  • National and Provincial Growth Strategies
  • Social and Labour Plan for the DME

Job Specification

Key Performance Areas

  • Strategy development and implementation
  • Policies and Procedures development  Budgeting / Mining charter / BBBEE deliverables
  • Operational requirements and duties
  • Monitor legal compliance / SHREQ / Reporting
  • Community Relations / People Management
  • Manage the company’s socioeconomic and environment departments
  • Ensure that the company’s environmental and socioeconomic strategy is implemented
  • Assess new risks and implement processes to mitigate them
  • Pro-actively assessing impacts of their mining operations on surrounding communities
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to the environmental and socioeconomic teams as needed
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the health, safety and security departments to ensure a uniform approach to local communities
  • Ensure compliance to legal requirements and commitments
  • Develop annual plans for the company’s environmental and community stewardship programmes
  • This is an expatriate role therefore you will be based in country and on a day to day basis be working very closely with the communities, the employees and stakeholders in and around the mine
  • Advise the mining group on the global sustainable development agenda and the risks and opportunities that it presents to the group, identifying key issues relating to mining and sustainable development
  • Develop the mine’s responses to the sustainable development agenda
  • Integration of sustainable development principles and thinking into the way the mine conducts its business, which includes issues of governance and external reporting, engaging stakeholders, ethical considerations, socioeconomic development, reducing the environmental and energy footprint as well as ensuring consistency of products throughout the supply chain
  • Produce the annual sustainability report as well as reports to authorities on black economic empowerment, policies and procedures for the management of environmental issues and occupational health and safety
