Regional Mining Lead, Environment

Our team of environment specialists offers clients expertise in air quality, impact analysis and permitting, environmental health and safety management consulting/due diligence, remediation consulting/engineering and construction/site restoration, specialty and emerging technologies, waste services and water and natural resources.

We are currently seeking a talented individual to be the regional leader for environmental services to the mining and minerals sector in Central Canada.

This position will suit an accomplished seller-doer with extensive networks in the mining sector in the region and an acknowledged and respected “go to person” by the mining industry and regulators, preferably for social and environment impact assessment and permitting. However, candidates with acknowledged leadership in other services such mine waste/tailings and water management, mine closure and corporate social responsibility/sustainability would also be considered favourably.

This position will be responsible to formulating and implementing an aggressive 5 year strategic plan and annual sales/BD plans to grow AECOM's environmental, water and waste management services to mining and minerals industry. It is envisaged the successful candidate will work closely with his/her counterparts in adjoining regions and with AECOM's mining engineering teams on strategic pursuits and client relationship management.

Another key responsibility will be for recruiting and developing talent for building the bench strength in the region to suite the targeted clients and services. Ideally the position will be Toronto based, but strong candidates from other locations in eastern Canada will be considered. Extensive travel within the region and from time to time elsewhere in the Americas is expected.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead the development and growth of AECOM's environment and related services to the mining sector to establish AECOM as a recognized leading provider of these services to the minerals and mining sector in Canada Central and the broader eastern Canada-US Midwest region within 3 years.
  • In collaboration with the AECOM's mining, practice and operations leadership formulate and implement a 3 year strategic plan to achieve the above goal of environmental leadership in the mining and minerals sector in eastern Canada and the US Midwest.
  • Prepare and implement annual tactical sales/BD and recruiting plans and budgets to deliver the 3 year strategic goals.
  • Promote a culture of excellence in health and safety behaviour and technical and service quality within the environmental mining services team.
  • Build and mentor the mining team.
  • Maintain and build strong relationships with target mineral and mining clients in your region.
  • Account manager or account director role in one or more larger key accounts relevant to your region.
  • Support major pursuits and bids both for multi-disciplinary x business line projects to the mining sector within the region and from time to time externally.
  • Act in project director capacity on major projects from time to time in your area of specialisation.
  • Target utilisation 40%.
  • Prepare progress reports on an as required basis to regional and end market leadership.

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or Science (geology, hydrogeology, or chemistry
  • 15 to 20 years of direct experience working in the mining sector Strong technical background and experience in mine project development from exploration through feasibility studies, permitting, construction, as well as operation and closure.
  • Experience in managing Environmental and Social Impact Statements, Environmental Assessments, Community relations planning and management, Conflict resolution and Public participation experience, provincial and federal regulatory requirements, and First Nations consultation is desirable.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong attention to details and schedules.
  • (Multi-lingual skills - French and/or Spanish would be an advantage)
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills, maintain professional candor at all times.
  • Must have well developed and successful track record in growing an environmental business in the mining or related industry sector.
  • Must be analytical with attention to detail, able to multi-task, and well organized.
  • Must be able to travel for projects as needed.
