Lab Technician Minerals Coal

Primary Responsibilities

Analyzing of all coal samples for specific analysis using the correct procedures and/or methods
Calibration of instruments
Verifying of instruments
Assist with the maintenance of instruments and apparatus
Diagnose all suspect results and assist in rectifying the problem whether it is equipment or analytical
Calculate test results as per standard format an/or procedures
Report results within the time frame specified by the contract
Completion and filing of Control charts for the standards of the instruments used
Calculate all test results in a standard format as per relevant Test Method Instruction for each workstation
Verify test results against control samples and charts
Re-analyse analysis samples when control results are not within the control charts limits
Changing of gas cylinders
Cleaning of laboratory and immediate working area
Ensure that quality procedures are complied with
Ensure compliance with the Mines Health and Safety Act and the NOSA 5 Star Safety System
Assist with training of new Laboratory Assistants and Operators on new methods and/or procedures
Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager

Lab Supervisor

Specific responsibilities

Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environment without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to action
Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situations to higher authority to take action
Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified
Any person has the right to refuse to perform work that may damage the environment in an imminent and serious way and to report such a situation

Profile

To analyze coal samples in the most accurate and productive way and report the results correctly, clearly, objectively, and timely as per relevant Test Method Instruction Skills

Education

Minimum Grade 12 (Matric) or N3 Mathematics and Science

Experience

Minimum of 1 year coal analysis and general laboratory experience

Competencies

Punctuality
Basic calculation capability
Good quality of work
