Geotechnical Engineer

An exciting opportunity exists for a Geotechnical Engineer.  He/She will provide geotechnical support and input into mine design, new open-pit and dewatering decline development studies, open pit cutback redesigns and existing pit wall stability assessments

Skills / Edu / Exp

  • Must have a tertiary qualifications in Geology accompanied with demonstrated geotechnical experience
  • Previous experience with geotechnical software systems and advanced studies in rock mechanics are preferred
  • Minimum 5 years exp as a geotechnical engineer
  • Must be eligible for registration as a professional person by an accredited institute

Duties

  • Through the application of rock mechanics principles to mine design, the individual is also responsible for optimizing open cut operations with a sufficient factor of safety, monitoring slopes and geotechnical aspects in the mine to ensure safe operations, evaluate and provide geotechnical recommendations for waste dump and mine infrastructure development
  • Developing and implementing standards and procedures as well as monitoring regimes in respect to slope and ground control monitoring;
  • Provide a strong contribution to maintaining and improving the site safety, health and environment culture, inclusive of - advocating specific training, compliance, awareness and participation;
  • Supervision and training of junior geotechnical geologists and other technical staffing the geotechnical aspects of: pit mapping, core orientation, core logging, data input and data analysis, ground control monitoring
  • Provide input into all aspects of open pit design and operation impacting on pit stability, inclusive of - drill and blast practices; pit design; mining practices; dewatering and depressurization requirements
  • Conduct pit wall geotechnical stability & safety analyses, inclusive of pro-active and reactive (post-failure) reviews and investigations
  • Ensure geotechnical test work/samples is conducted, analysed and that data is incorporated into geotechnical designs
  • Maintain ongoing geological and geotechnical mapping across all active pits and dewatering decline as a high priority task
  • Participate in the writing, compilation, editing and completion of geotechnical reports and sections of specialist and non-technical reports requiring geotechnical comment;
  • Proactively lead, supervise and manage the Geotechnical Section of the Geology department to achieving industry best geotechnical practice and continued safe mining.
  • Strong communications and reporting skills are essential
