Metallurgical Engineer/Specialist
Job Description
- United States Steel Corporation has an immediate opening for a Metallurgical Engineer/Specialist in our Customer Technical Service/Product Technology North organization. This position serves a customer territory generally located in Ohio and neighboring states. The product lines involved are primarily Tin and Container. The territory and mill support involves overnight travel; however, residence in mid/eastern Ohio preferred in order to minimize such travel.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Monitors quality performance of mill and competition at assigned customer locations;
- Contributes towards continuous improvement in product quality;
- Communicates and contributes to new technical developments for customer and market;
- Reviews and approves customer specifications and requirements;
- Insures accurate entry of customer requirements onto mill orders;
- Investigates and dispositions rejected material at customer locations;
- Accurately communicates problems to mills and establishes containment;
- Identifies root cause, implements corrective action and provides customer feedback; and
- Documents results in claim system, following established claim policies.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field
- At least five years of related experience with flat roll products in quality or operating functions
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which includes extensive tin mill processing/product experience
- Ability and willingess to travel overnight about 25% of the time
Skills/Abilities:
- Understanding of mill product quality standards, capabilities and limitations
- Familiarity with ASTM and industry standards
- Excellent communication and problem solving skills, with a strong focus on continuous improvement and cost avoidance
- Previous management experience
- Formal education in metallurgy, material science or mechanical engineering preferred
- Certification in problem solving techniques such as Shainin and 6-Sigma preferred
- Tin mill process/product experience preferred
