Tool & Die Maker

Responsibilities

• Perform duties to repair, maintain, modify and construct a wide variety of jigs, fixtures, gauges, molds, dies and replacement parts to support production and maintenance departments.
• Work from instructions using complex drawings, sketches, requisitions, charts, tables, handbook formulas and instructions.
• Plan and layout work assignment for method and material.
• Work to exacting tolerances.
• Determine extent of repairs, procedures, sequences of work and tooling requirements.
• Determine time estimate for proposed work as required.
• Set up and operate all N/C, CNC and conventional machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, boring mill, drill press, jig mill to perform difficult and exacting machine operations.
• Perform gas and electric welding and have knowledge of welding stress and how to control for minimum distortions.
• Perform various heat treating operations on a variety of metals.
• Work with Tool Design and supervision to make or improve jigs and fixtures.
• Make or repair toolholders, tap drivers, boring bars and special tools and tooling.
• Test new and prototype tooling.
• Install and maintain hydraulic and electrical clamping devices on jigs and fixtures as designed.
• Identify incoming raw material such as bar and sheet stock and various types of alloys and place in storage racks.
• Assemble, fit and align components into finished product.
• Clean, deburr, stamp or make I.D. numbers, paint as required.
• Inspect work prior to sending to final inspection as necessary.
• Design simple fixtures for shop and tool and grinding rooms.
• Locate and store in proper locations incoming supplies.
• Clean and haul chips and lubricate machines periodically.
• Redress or grind tools such as twist drills, carbide tip and HSS tools for Tool Room use.
• Use CRT for Tool Management System.
• Operate company vehicle to run errands as required by supervision.
• Use a variety of precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, verniers, height gauge, scales, rules and bore gauges.
• Use riding fork and reach fork, floor operated overhead bridge crane, two and four wheel hand carts, pneumatic and electric power hand tools and hand tools.

Qualifications

• Previous operational experiences in supporting the production and maintenance of fixtures, tooling, and dies are preferred.
