Safety Technician - Mine

Overview:

  • The Safety Technician is responsible for assuring that all mine safety policies and procedures are being followed.  This includes assuring that all personal protective gear, including appropriate eyewear, footwear, gloves, hardhat, etc., are in use.  The Safety Technician counsels with employees and leadership, primarily first level leadership , in assuring that all safety policies are understood and being followed.  The Safety Technician provides safety briefings, as necessary, at crew and supervisor meetings and maintains and reports out on appropriate safety statistics and provides input to safety leadership and Compliance Technicians on working conditions and potential hazardous working conditions.  The Safety Technician participates as a subject matter expert in Safety Committees.   The Safety Technician actively participates in safety observations.

Responsibilities:
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

  • Conducts all respirable dust samples
  • Conduct noise sampling on all employees annually
  • Maintaining constant vigilance in assuring that all safety and personal protective equipment policies are being followed.  Discusses unsafe practices with employees and leadership.
  • Maintains presence at crew meetings and pre-shift briefings.
  • Maintains safety statistics and reports results to crews and leadership.
  • Regularly attends Safety Committee meetings and provides technical input.
  • Performs safety observations and assists Compliance Technicians as required.

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participates in regular safety meetings.
  • Assists in other outby responsibilities as time permits.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Expected to provide authority of knowledge to Crew Leaders and Shift Managers.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

  • High School or GED

Certification/Licensure

  • Must have valid Illinois State Driver’s License
  • Illinois Examiner’s Certificate Preferred
  • MSHA Dust Card preferred
  • Illinois E M T a plus

Knowledge of

  • All safety standards applicable to both above ground and underground mining activities.
  • Industrial Hygiene standards applicable to a mining environment.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skills, abilities and physical requirements
  • Ability to clearly communicate with maintenance and mining personnel, including supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong sense of closure…”complete what you start”.
  • Ability to clearly communicate in writing.
  • Ability to read and understand mine plans.
  • Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Ability to work any assigned shift, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to work unsupervised as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Stand for 6 to 10 hours on uneven rocky surfaces
  • Walk for up to 8 hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Lift up to 70 pounds without mechanical assistance. Work from elevated positions, walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off of equipment and must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift as a result of the mine height.
  • Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.
  • Perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs and good hand to eye coordination.

  • Will work in damp, dimly lit and confined work areas and will be subjected to extremes of ambient temperature.
