Responsibilities
- Perform safety and occupational health management, surveillance, inspections, and safety enforcement.
- Must be able to meet deadlines and contribute to a positive, safe, high-quality culture. The construction industry is a fast-paced environment that requires decision-making and problem solving skills.
Critical components of the job are:
- Conduct daily safety and health inspections and maintain a written log which includes area/operation inspected, date of inspection, identified hazards, recommended corrective actions, estimated and actual dates of corrections. Attach safety inspections logs to the contractors' daily quality control report.
- Conduct mishap investigations and complete required reports. Maintain the OSHA Form 300 and Daily Production reports for prime and sub-contractors.
- Maintain applicable safety reference material on the job site.
- Attend the pre-construction conference, pre-work meetings including preparatory inspection meeting, and periodic in-progress meetings.
- Implement and enforce accepted APPS and AHAs.
- Maintain a safety and health deficiency tracking system that monitors outstanding deficiencies until resolution. Post a list of unresolved safety and health deficiencies on the safety bulletin board.
- Ensure sub-contractor compliance with safety and health requirements.
- The SSHO shall be responsible for managing, implementing and enforcing the Contractor's Safety and Health Program in accordance with the accepted APP.
- Failure to perform the above duties will result in dismissal.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 10 years safety work of a progressive nature with at least 5 years of construction industry safety experience or three (3) years if he/she possesses a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or safety and health degree. Must have held a safety managers position building bridges and road work.
- OSHA 500 certificate is not required by, but is desirable.
- The SSHO, as a minimum, must have completed the 30 hour OSHA, Construction class or as an equivalent 30 hours of formal construction safety and health training covering the subjects of the OSHA 30-hour course with a competent person status for at least the following areas of competency:
- Excavation, Scaffolding, Fall protection, Hazardous energy, Confined space, health and hazard recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, physical and biological agents, and personal protective equipment and clothing to include selection, use and maintenance.
- An average of at least 24 hours of formal safety training each year for the past 5 years with training for competent person status for at least the following areas of competency: Excavation;
- Scaffolding; fall protection; Hazardous energy; Confined space; Health hazard recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, physical and biological agents; and Personal protective equipment and clothing to include selection, use and maintenance. Must be verifiable either by certificate or letter stating the courses were completed. (i.e. OSHA 500, 10 and 30 hour, hazmat, etc.)
- SSHOs shall maintain this competency through 24 hours of formal safety and health related coursework every four (4) years.
- Must be willing and able to relocate.
