Research Associate In Carbonate Isotope Geochemistry

The Mineral Deposit Research Unit in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the position of Research Associate to lead a new research project in Carbonate Alteration Isotope Geochemistry.  This position will provide scientific and logistical leadership to successfully achieve a wide range of project objectives which includes the development of new instrumentation in cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy, documentation of isotopic alteration haloes in carbonate minerals, evaluation of carbonate minerals using LA-ICP, and carbon reservoir fingerprinting in CO2 sequestration systems. The position will also require the, supervision of graduate students, extensive industry interactions and training, and international-level research outputs.  The candidate must demonstrate a high-level of geological knowledge as it relates to mineral exploration, structural permeability and fluid flow, and creating 3D models of these features.  Specific knowledge of hydrothermal mineral deposit formation, ore fluid chemistry, and cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy instruments are also required.

Minimum Requirements: 

• The ideal candidate will have a PhD in geology specializing in economic geology or geochemistry with at least three years of post-doctoral experience in analytical mineral geochemistry, including at least 1-year of instrument design. 
• The candidate will have expertise in analytical geochemistry with hands-on experience using SEM, EMPA, XRD, MIA and LA-ICP-MS, as well as excellent petrography and computing skills. 
• The candidate will be adept and have a track record of writing and presenting results in reports, oral presentations and at scientific conferences.
• The candidate will spend extended periods of time in remote and rugged field locations.

This one-year appointment will begin as early as April 1st, 2012, with possible extensions depending on funding.  Salary will be depend on the candidate’s experience and expertise, the minimum stipend for a Research Associate I as of July 1, 2009 is $51,140.82 Can. per annum.
