Yard Associate

Primary purpose:

  • Perform operations pertaining to the loading and offloading of barges, railcars and trucks using heavy equipment such as boom cranes, front-end loaders, large forklifts and excavators

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Comply with warehousing and inventory controls
  • Ensure operations are performed in accordance with approved procedures and company policy
  • Complete all documentation required for terminal operations
  • Participate and attend all safety meetings
  • Strictly adhere to all environmental, health and safety regulations
  • Perform maintenance and all other tasks assigned by terminal supervision
  • Maintain material handling equipment by completing pre-operation start-up check list of equipment
  • Visually verify the physical condition of product to be unloaded / loaded.  Report any discrepancies
  • Assure the safety of all personnel within equipment operation area.  Cease operation and correct any safety concerns
  • Maintain housekeeping standards within the assigned equipment
  • Be familiar with all safety and operating procedures
  • River barge deck work—handling of lines/cables, hooking of lids for removal/replacement
  • Become proficient in all work areas and equipment operation, culminating with crane and excavator training.
  • Must be able to take direction / supervision and work cooperatively with others
  • Other duties as required.

Position Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.

Experience / specific knowledge:

  • Must have a current, valid driver’s license.
  • Should possess some practical operating experience / skills in / with one or more of the following:
  • Street Sweeper – 1 to 2 years preferred
  • Forklift – 2 to 3 years preferred
  • Conveyors / belts – 1 to 2 years preferred
  • Front-end loaders / Skid steers – 2 to 3 years preferred
  • Crushers / screeners - 1 to 2 years preferred
  • Excavators  - 2 to 3 years preferred

Competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • Computer skills
  • Competency with basic math
  • Must be able to read, write, add and subtract both positive and negative numbers.

Physical demands:

  • Must be capable of frequent lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. and occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb up and down ladders
  • Must demonstrate hand, eye and foot coordination necessary to safely and efficiently operate assigned equipment
  • Ability to do work requiring stooping and bending
  • Ability to stand for protracted periods of time
  • Minimal overhead lifting
  • Minimal pushing or pulling overhead
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to wear a half-mask, cartridge type respirator

Working conditions:

  • Will be required to work indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions in order to fulfill the needs of the operation
  • May be required to work overtime, as needed, as dictated by the needs of the terminal
  • Certain conditions of employment are governed by agreement between the company and the United Steelworkers of America
  • May be required to work daylight, afternoon or night shift, including weekends, as required or assigned
