Labour Market Economist

Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Research, the "Labour Market Economist" is responsible for conducting a number of MiHR's labour market research projects.  Responsibilities include the intellectual development, primary and secondary research, analysis and reporting and dissemination of labour market conditions and forecasts for the minerals and metals sector.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Research, other MiHR team members, industry stakeholders and MiHR's LMI clients.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

  • contribute to the intellectual development of econometric models to forecast HR requirements and talent availability within the exploration and mining industry, researching labour market information
  • Ongoing intellectual development and continuous improvement of MiHR labour market forecast models, products, and tools
  • Monitor economic conditions and ensure integrity and validity of MiHR labour market forecasts
  • work directly with external clients and stakeholders to build custom models and forecasts of regional and local labour market conditions, and incorporate local intelligence back into MiHR's national forecasts and models
  • conduct primary and secondary research on labour market conditions and econometric models of employment, hiring requirements, and talent availability
  • develop labour market intelligence products that contribute to the research priorities of the Council
  • speak with authority on exploration and mining labour market issues, present forecasts and outlooks on labour market conditions  and respond to requests for information from colleagues, stakeholders and the external community
  • maintain valid and up to date database of LMI and other statistical information relevant to socio-economics and labour market forecasting in exploration and mining
  • Build and expand support for the "Mining Industry Workforce Information Network", MiHR's labour market intelligence and forecasting program
  • Support the production of accurate, relevant, and current communication tools, such as publications and articles, and MiHR's LMI website at www.mininghrforecasts.ca

Education, Competencies And Experience

  • University degree in Economics, Social Sciences, Commerce or equivalent
  • 3-5 years experience working in a related field
  • experience in labour market analysis and economic forecasting and modelling
  • experience in managing external client relationships and providing custom research in a clear and accessible manner
  • ability to write and communicate effectively
  • ability to conduct and interpret qualitative and quantitative research
  • ability to work individually and in a team environment
  • ability to present research findings to sophisticated external audiences
