Job Description

  • [Company] is currently seeking Principal Level Rock Mechanics / Geotechnical Engineers to develop, build and support our growing Rock Mechanics Group across both our Mining & Metals and Environment & Infrastructure divisions.   These positions can be located in the US, Canada or South America.
  • Reporting to the Manager of Consulting / Area Manager, the Principal Rock Mechanics / Geotechnical Engineer Leads will be responsible for developing and leading a team, providing expertise and applying rock mechanics principles to surface and underground mine design problems. He/she will work on the full project scope, from study level to the detailed design and construction, liaising with other technical specialists.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and grow [Company] Rock Mechanics team;
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to multi-disciplinary geotechnical teams;
  • Assist in marketing [Company] underground mining abilities and services, and help expand [Company]  presence;
  • Assist in hiring and training staff and expand the teams’ capabilities;
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in project management, including budget, schedule and deliverable performance;
  • Support underground and open pit mine engineering at various levels from conceptual studies to detailed engineering.

Oversee:

  • Design of mine openings, pillars, stopes, and rock mass excavations, using analytical and numerical tools,
  • Design of ground support requirements,
  • Design of backfill requirements,
  • Foundation design,
  • Open pit designs,
  • Slope stability analysis and determination using analytical and numerical tools.
  • Network with staff from other [Company] offices and divisions, and participate in cross-sharing of resources; Build strong and enduring relationships between[Company] and its clients.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidates will possess an advanced degree in Mining / Geotechnical Engineering related to rock mechanics, with a minimum of 15 years relevant experience, including underground operating mine experience, or underground civil construction. Block cave and backfill experience are considered an asset.
  • It is essential that candidates have the following skills: ground support design, 2D-3D computer modeling skills, including knowledge or proficiency in numerical modeling using finite element, finite difference and/or discrete element methods.
  • These positions require individuals with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, those who can effectively run meetings and communicate clearly and accountably with clients, staff and co-workers. 
  • Excellent organization/time management skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, are preferred.
