Lab Manager

Primary Responsibilities

Attends to the needs of every client (site) in a timely and professional manner. To achieve this, the KPIs for the contract must be continuously maintained and performance improved, operate within budget to maximize revenue and profit and involve employees in the operation of the Laboratory.

Reporting to

  • Operations Manager.

Specific responsibilities

  • Management of the resources available at the laboratory including preparation of budgets, setting priorities\objectives, allocating resources to ensure optimum outcomes whiles maintaining effective cost control. 
  • Ensures continued delivery of analytical services to clients within acceptable standards and exceed these standards and c-class requirements. 
  • Ensures performance reviews for employees are carried out and completed within stipulated time lines and provide guidance and counsel to staff for performance improvement purposes. 
  • Optimizes the operations of the laboratory to include maximum community involvement (employees, suppliers, contractors and welfare responsibilities).
  • Coordinates all administrative and personnel issues with the Human Resources Department of the country of location as well as with the West Africa Regional Human Resources Manager responsible for Minerals. 
  • Provides the appropriate support, counselling and when necessary disciplinary measures to maintain the SGS values and Code of Integrity and Professional Conduct. 
  • Maintains, sources for and gains contracts and increase business. 
  • Ensures all activities within and undertaken by the laboratory meet with world class standards of Safety, Health and Environment and with a great sense of duty of care.

Profile

Departmental Relations

  • Have oversight administrative control of the laboratory under his control.

External Relations:

  • Nurture and maintain preliminary contact and relationships with all suppliers, service providers, consultancy firms, and relevant government agencies
  • community assemblies.
  • Nurture and maintain contact with client and potential clients. Authority Limit
  • Authorize payment as per a defined authority limit.
  • Authorize all employee training and developments for his site.
  • Control cost in line with agreed budgets.

Skills

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of First Degree in Chemistry or Laboratory Management or its equivalent with a minimum of five (5) years work related experiences in a similar position within a multinational company.
Technical competencies 
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Operations and issues.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office Suite as well as laboratory software applications.
  • Experience in the use of XRF equipment in an analytical laboratory environment will be an added advantage.
  • Gold laboratory experience is also desirable but not required. 
  • Managerial Competencies
  • Ability to consistently meet KPIs objectives.
  • Ability to understand and use marketing strategies and performance assessment techniques.
  • Ability to understand corporate systems, procedures, policies and assist implement them.
  • Ability to examine possibilities for improving financial management and reporting procedures for laboratory's and associated operations.

Personality Competencies:

  • Must be customer service oriented 
  • Analytical problem solving ability
  • Must be achievement oriented Language Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English Language is required for this job.
  • Working knowledge of French Language will be an added advantage.
