The principal function of this position is to: Undertake and lead project work involving all elements of underground construction using the Sprayed Concrete Lining method of ground support. The person would working as the expert within that field as part of a multi-disciplinary team, or as a sole consultant providing high quality advice to clients. There would be the need to support bids with technical input
The priorities of this role include:
• Lead and manage designs teams using the Sprayed Concrete Lining method.
• Assist with the development of more junior engineers and team members
• Design of tunnels and underground structures including caverns
• Production of design solutions, reports, specifications and drawings, covering a range of project requirements from new build to modification, maintenance and refurbishment

Requirements
The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge.
These points should align with the key areas of responsibility:
• Emphasis on design -for the formation of shallow urban tunnels requiring non TBM excavations and sprayed concrete and in situ lining techniques
• Proficient in assessing engineering geology/geotechnical responses, sequential tunnel face excavation, ground movements and monitoring, soil/structure interaction, numerical and structural analysis, and concrete mix design
• Technology appropriate for primary and secondary concrete /shotcrete support of excavations and tunnel linings.
• Experience in leading design teams and have practical tunnel construction experience using SCL techniques in soft and medium hard geological formations in urban locations and in compliance with BSEN/Eurocode standards
• Knowledge of geotechnical in situ testing techniques and interpretation for the design of SCL underground structures
• Working knowledge of numerical modelling techniques of underground openings in soils, soft ground and rock and available software e.g. Plaxis, Crisp, Sofistik or equivalent, etc.
• Current use of SCL as primary support and final linings (including the use of shotcrete, steel fibers, lattice girders, microsilica, etc.)
• Knowledge of in situ monitoring techniques for underground construction in rock pre-, during & post-construction
• Range of technical and managerial capabilities with in-depth knowledge in underground construction techniques in soils and rock - shafts, tunnels, caverns
• Understanding of different construction methods including sequential excavation and effects on design.
• Excavation techniques in compliance with H & S requirements A knowledge of structural design of RC and steel sections
• Able to carry out value engineering
• Able to produce Risk Assessments and Specifications
• Excellent inter-personal and negotiation skills are essential, with the ability to understand and present others' points of view
• Self motivated and able to work under own initiative
• A high degree of oral and written communication skills is required; ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear and lucid way to all levels
