Manager, Environmental

Job Summary:

  • Plan, coordinate and manage the overall environmental compliance programs at the PA Operations. Develop annual and long term budgets for environmental costs such as, reclamation, waste disposal, consulting, and water monitoring. Proactively address all environmental issues that are required for the timely, cost effective and legal compliance required to support the execution of the mine plan. Responsible for environmental permitting for the existing and future mining in the PA division. Interact with governmental agencies and political action groups by providing information, advice, support and guidance on environmental matters which impact on mining in PA. Assist in determining the feasibility of proposed mining plans. Participate in community relations to protect the company’s image in the region.

  • Develops environmental department staff
  • Enforce Running Right principles
  • Environmental Permits
  • Environmental Compliance
  • Environmental Audits
  • Advise and support operations
  • Recommend remedial actions to ensure compliance
  • Communicate with operations on environmental policies and regulations
  • Develops environmental management system
  • Develops Environmental Budget and Environmental cost performance
  • Hydrologic monitoring and reporting
  • Waste disposal program and approvals
  • Stream assessments and restoration relative to longwall mining
  • Provides technical support to operations on environmental issues
  • Assists the land department regarding hydrologic and subsidence issues
  • Provides timely and accurate submittal of required documents and reports required under permit conditions
  • Prepares bids and job specifications for consulting services, such as, permitting, stream mitigation activities, and hydrologic and biological studies
  • Promotes good working relationship with government agencies
  • Participates in outside regional committees and the PCA

Job Requirements:

  • B.S. Degree in Environmental related field; Master's Degree preferred
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in environmental field or related experience
  • Must possess good working knowledge of PA Title 25 and US Title 40 CFR as related to mining operations
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental management or related field
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting requirements, reclamation practices, environmental control technologies, and engineering practices at coal mines – Pennsylvania experience a plus but not required
  • Knowledge of mining practices , processes and permitting requirements; Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects on company-wide basis
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations including SMCRA, CWA, RCRA, CAA, and Pennsylvania Title 25
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate permitting, regulatory, and compliance issues with governmental agencies and general public
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with databases required
  • Highly motivated self-starter with ability to work in a team environment
